Chapter 13 - The Last Stand on the Stairs

With a sudden burst of adrenaline born from pure desperation, Julian slapped the silver tray out of Clara’s hands. The glass shattered against the stone hearth, and the white capsule bounced across the Persian rug, disappearing beneath a heavy leather armchair.

Clara gasped, stumbling backward against the bookshelves, while Arthur’s face hardened into a mask of cold fury.

“Grab him!” Arthur commanded.

Miller lunged forward, but Julian was already on his feet, driving his shoulder straight into the detective’s chest. The impact sent Miller crashing into the mahogany coffee table, scattering teacups and ledgers across the floor. Julian didn't look back; he bolted past them through the open oak door and sprinted up the narrow steel stairs leading out of the bunker.

“Stop him!” Emily shouted, her voice echoing off the concrete walls.

Julian took the metal steps two at a time, his boots clanging loudly in the enclosed stairwell. His lungs burned, his muscles screamed in protest, and the blood roaring in his ears drowned out the shouts of pursuit echoing from below. He pushed through the heavy vault door at the top of the stairs, bursting back into the amber-lit storage room filled with glass jars and identical bassinets.

He didn't stop for the exit leading to the nursery above. He knew they would be waiting for him there. Instead, his eyes locked onto a heavy steel emergency exit door marked with red stenciled lettering on the far side of the vault.

Emergency Evacuation Route – Estate Grounds.

Julian sprinted across the room, dodging steel shelves and kicking aside a stray bassinet as he reached the heavy push-bar of the exit door. Sirens began to wail overhead—not the medical alarm from before, but a low, subterranean klaxon signaling a full security breach.

He slammed his full body weight against the push-bar. The heavy steel groaned, the rusted hinges popping with a sharp metallic snap, and the door swung outward, flooding the dark bunker with cool, damp autumn air and the genuine light of a moonlit sky.

Julian didn't hesitate. He threw himself through the opening into the overgrown grass of the estate’s southern acreage, tumbling down a steep earthen embankment just as Detective Miller’s boots hit the concrete threshold behind him.

“Vance! Stop right there!” Miller roared, his voice cutting through the wailing alarm.
