Chapter 1 - The Shattered Nursery

The crystal chandelier above cast fractured prisms across the silk wallpaper of the master nursery. Julian Vance knelt on the imported Persian rug, his black button-up shirt damp with cold sweat and tears, his dark wavy hair clinging to his forehead. Behind him, three municipal police officers stood frozen, their hands hovering near their gun belts, entirely paralyzed by the suddenness of the catastrophe. In the center of the room, a medical bassinet sat connected to an aluminum IV pole, its digital monitor flatlining with a piercing, unbroken electronic shriek.

Elena, the household maid with her dark hair drawn into a tight bun, crisp white headband, and traditional black dress with a starchy apron, stepped deliberately toward the bassinet. Without a single wasted movement, she reached down and scooped the infant—swaddled securely in a light blue blanket—against her chest.

Julian lurched forward, his joints cracking against the hardwood floor. His breath caught in his throat, his chest heaving as reality fractured around him.

“Who the hell are you?” Julian screamed, his voice cracking from raw panic, cutting through the synthetic alarm.

Elena did not flinch. She pressed her lips gently against the infant’s forehead, her expression serene yet terrifyingly detached. Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot, wide, and swimming with utter desperation.

“What are you doing?” Julian choked out, reaching a trembling hand toward her skirt, his fingers grazing only empty air as she stepped backward toward the ornate balcony doors.

The police officers finally snapped out of their shock, drawing their weapons with metallic clicks, shouting commands that dissolved into white noise. Julian stared up into Elena’s unblinking eyes, every muscle in his body rigid with agonizing dread.

“Emily...” Julian whispered, his voice dropping to a broken, pleading gasp as the infant stirred faintly within the blue flannel.

Elena turned her head slightly toward the shattered French doors, the howling wind outside swirling autumn leaves across the polished floorboards. She looked down at the tiny face pressed against her heart and whispered something completely incomprehensible before she lunged straight through the glass.
