Chapter 9

The first rays of sunlight pierced through the nursery blinds, casting warm, horizontal stripes across the wooden floorboards. Julian had not slept a wink; he had spent the entire night sitting in the rocking chair, listening for any sound from the hallway below. Maya had eventually fallen into a restless sleep around dawn, curled up under a light blanket on the daybed. Little Leo woke up right on schedule at six o'clock, crying softly for his morning feeding. Julian handled the diaper change and bottle preparation with practiced, silent efficiency, desperate to keep the household calm until the authorities arrived.
At precisely 8:00 AM, a sharp knock echoed at the front door downstairs. Julian carefully set Leo down in his crib, gave Maya a reassuring nod, and hurried out of the nursery. He descended the stairs, bypassing the guest room where the door remained firmly shut, and unlocked the front door. Standing on the porch were two individuals: Officer Davis from the previous night, and a woman in her late forties with a professional clipboard, wearing a sharp navy blue blazer and introducing herself as Elena Vance—no relation to Clara—from the county child welfare and family stabilization division.
"Mr. Hayes? Thank you for meeting us," Elena said, flashing a compassionate yet strictly professional smile as she stepped into the foyer. "Officer Davis briefed me on the situation regarding your mother-in-law and the infant safety concern."
"Thank you for coming so quickly," Julian replied, gesturing for them to step inside. "Please, come in. My sister and the baby are upstairs."
Before Elena could respond, the guest room door down the hall clicked open. Clara emerged, looking remarkably composed, wearing a tailored cream-colored sweater and dark slacks, her gray hair pinned back immaculately. She walked toward them with an air of practiced grace, extending a hand toward the social worker before Julian could intervene.
"Good morning. I am Clara Vance, Sarah’s mother," Clara said smoothly, her voice carrying a tone of dignified authority. "I assume Julian has been filling your head with exaggerated stories about last night. My daughter passed away, and he has been struggling with severe grief-induced paranoia. I have simply been trying to hold this broken family together."

Elena paused, looking from Clara to Julian, her practiced eyes immediately recognizing the complex, highly toxic dynamic at play. "Mrs. Vance, I'm Elena Vance with child services. We received a mandatory welfare and safety escalation regarding a prescription medication incident and a physical altercation in the home. I would like to speak with everyone individually, beginning with you, and then with Mr. Hayes and his sister."
Clara’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before she quickly recovered, nodding graciously. "Of course. I have nothing to hide. I only want what is best for my grandson."
