The house on Elm Street was finally quiet in the way homes are supposed to be—filled with the soft hum of everyday life, the gentle patter of tiny feet as Leo learned to crawl, and the comforting rhythm of shared dinners around the kitchen table. Julian had transformed the guest room into a dedicated playroom for Leo, painting the walls a warm, inviting sky blue and filling the space with colorful toys and soft rugs.
One evening, after Leo had been tucked safely into his wooden crib with his star-patterned blanket, Julian sat in the rocking chair with a cup of tea, watching the snow gently fall outside the nursery window. Maya walked in quietly, carrying a stack of freshly laundered baby clothes, and placed them neatly into the wooden armoire. She paused, looking out the window at the quiet street below before turning to face her brother.
"You know," Maya said softly, resting her hands on the back of the rocking chair, "I went to the family center today. I visited the support group counselor."
Julian looked up, his expression attentive and encouraging. "How was it, Maya?"
"It was good," she replied with a genuine smile. "I talked about everything that happened with Clara. For a long time, I blamed myself for not seeing it sooner, for not stopping her before it got so bad. But the counselor helped me realize that none of it was our fault. We survived it, Julian. And we kept Leo safe."
