Chapter 1

The air in the nursery hung heavy, smelling of lavender baby lotion and sudden, bitter terror. Clara stood over the wooden crib, her knuckles white as she tightly gripped the long, dark hair of fourteen-year-old Maya. Maya was forced to bend uncomfortably forward toward the mattress where the newborn baby wailed in helpless panic. In the doorway stood Julian, a thirty-five-year-old man with short dark hair, a trimmed beard, and a plaid flannel shirt layered over a white henley. His chest heaved, and his eyes were wide, red-rimmed, and swimming with hot, unfallen tears. Clara’s voice cut through the infant's cries with venomous finality as she stared down at the trembling teenager.

"You will answer for this!" Clara spat, her voice shaking with suppressed fury.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The scene before him defied every instinct he possessed. Clara, his mother-in-law, was supposed to be a sanctuary of stability after the chaotic birth of little Leo. Maya, his sensitive younger sister whom he had raised since their parents passed away, was supposed to be safe in this house. Yet here they were, locked in a brutal posture of accusation and defense. Julian wanted to scream, but his vocal cords refused to cooperate. The sheer disbelief paralyzed him for a heartbeat, freezing the horror into sharp, painful relief. He saw the way Maya’s shoulders shook, not just from the painful pull of her hair, but from utter exhaustion and defeat.

Clara adjusted her grip, refusing to relent even as the baby’s shrieks bounced off the nursery walls and the heavy wooden armoire in the corner seemed to loom like a silent judge. She believed she was protecting the infant from a perceived threat, blinded by her own rigid worldview and a bitter history that Julian was only beginning to understand. But Julian’s paralysis broke the moment Maya let out a small, strangled sob that pierced the fog of his shock. The protective instinct of an older brother and a desperate father surged through his veins, sweeping aside his hesitation and replacing it with a cold, focused fury that demanded immediate action.

With a sudden burst of momentum, Julian lunged forward from the doorway. His boots pounded against the hardwood floor, closing the distance between them in a fraction of a second. Clara’s eyes widened slightly as she sensed his approach, but she turned too late to brace herself. Julian grabbed Clara firmly by both arms, his grip ironclad and unyielding, and violently shoved her backward away from the crib. Clara lost her footing, tumbling hard onto the floor near a large stuffed teddy bear that sat propped against the nursery wall. She let out a sharp gasp of shock as the breath left her lungs, sliding against the baseboard with a dull thud. Julian stood over her, his chest heaving heavily as he looked down at the fallen woman with intense, burning anger, shielding Maya and the crying baby from any further harm.
