Chapter 10

The investigation moved into the downstairs study, a quiet, sunlit room lined with bookshelves and smelling faintly of old paper and leather. Elena Vance sat at the mahogany desk, pen poised over her clipboard, while Julian stood near the window, watching the driveway to ensure Clara didn't attempt to slip away. They had agreed to let Clara speak first, hoping that her carefully constructed facade would begin to crack under the sustained scrutiny of a trained professional who specialized in high-conflict family dynamics.
Inside the study, Clara sat with her hands folded neatly in her lap, presenting the picture of a devoted, misunderstood grandmother. However, Elena was not easily swayed by surface presentations. She had reviewed Officer Davis’s detailed notes regarding the amber prescription bottle and the physical confrontation in the nursery.
"Mrs. Vance, let’s talk about the medication found near the infant’s crib last night," Elena began, her voice level and devoid of accusation. "According to the pharmacy records pulled by the responding officers, that specific sedative was prescribed to you for severe anxiety and cognitive disorientation. It is classified as a controlled substance that carries strict safety warnings regarding infant care."
Clara sighed softly, shaking her head with a look of profound sorrow. "It is a tragedy, really. I take that medication occasionally to help me sleep through the night, given the profound grief of losing my daughter Sarah. I keep my things organized in my room. I believe Maya—Julian’s young sister—must have rummaged through my personal belongings out of curiosity or resentment and dropped the bottle near the crib. She has always resented my presence here, viewing me as an intruder in the home I built alongside my daughter."
Elena listened intently, jotting down notes before looking up sharply. "And the physical altercation? Mr. Hayes reported that he witnessed you forcefully pulling his sister's hair down toward the crib while shouting accusations."

"Julian arrived mid-panic," Clara countered smoothly, her voice dropping into a register of wounded innocence. "I found Maya leaning over the baby in a very strange, unresponsive manner. I reacted out of maternal instinct to pull her away. Julian, in his grief-fogged state, misinterpreted my protective action as aggression. He shoved me to the floor, Elena. He physically assaulted an elderly woman in his own home because he refuses to see the truth about his sister’s instability."
Outside the study, Julian listened through the partially cracked door, his fists clenching so tightly his knuckles turned white. The sheer audacity of Clara’s lies was staggering. She was systematically rewriting history to paint herself as the selfless savior and Maya as the unstable threat. Julian knew he couldn't let her narrative stand unchallenged any longer. He pushed the door open the rest of the way, stepping into the room with a cold, resolute fury that made both women turn to look at him.
