Chapter 7 - Breaking the Safe

The threat hung in the air, thick and poisonous, paralyzing Clara for a fraction of a second before a fierce maternal instinct flared deep within her chest. She took a deliberate step backward, positioning her body to shield the dark hallway leading to the living room where Lily was resting. The intruder took another heavy step forward, his hand still resting ominously inside his jacket. Julian cowered against the mahogany side table, completely paralyzed by fear, offering no protection whatsoever to the woman and child he had sworn to honor and protect.

“Don't you dare take another step toward my daughter,” Clara warned, her voice trembling slightly with adrenaline, yet carrying a steely edge that caused the intruder to pause momentarily.

The burly man chuckled darkly, stepping closer until the harsh light of the chandelier caught the jagged scar running down his cheek.

“You’re in way over your head, lady. Your husband traded your family’s safety to cover his high-stakes poker debts in Atlantic City. Those bearer bonds belong to my boss, and we are not leaving this house without them,” the man sneered, pulling his hand out of his jacket to reveal a heavy, steel-barreled crowbar.

Julian flinched, burying his face in his hands as the truth spilled out in front of his wife in the most humiliating way possible. Poker debts. Not tech investments, not bridge loans, but underground card games and high-limit tables while Clara stayed home raising their daughter.

“Poker?” Clara whispered, the word tasting like ash in her mouth. She looked at Julian with a mixture of absolute pity and blinding fury. “You destroyed our entire life for a card game?”

“Clara, please, just give them the combination!” Julian sobbed from the floor, entirely broken. “If you don't, they’ll kill us both!”

The intruder stepped past Julian, ignoring the pathetic man completely, and leveled his cold stare at Clara.

“The study safe, Mrs. Vance. Now. You have thirty seconds before I go fetch the kid myself,” the man demanded, raising the crowbar slightly to emphasize his point.

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her mind raced through every possible exit strategy. The study was located at the far end of the eastern hallway, right next to the secondary exit leading to the detached garage. If she could lead them into the study and pretend to work the dial, she might be able to trigger the silent security alarm wired directly to her brother’s smartphone.

“Fine,” Clara said coldly, her jaw set as she turned toward the eastern corridor. “Follow me. But touch my daughter again, and I swear I’ll burn this entire house down around all of us.”

The intruder grunted in approval, signaling his partner to watch the front entrance as he trailed closely behind Clara down the dimly lit hallway. As Clara reached the heavy mahogany double doors of the study, she slipped her hand into her cardigan pocket, her fingers brushing against her phone, and quietly pressed the emergency speed-dial button without looking.
