Chapter 10 - Sirens in the Driveway

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers painted erratic, pulsing patterns across the high ceilings of the foyer, turning the elegant dining room into a surreal crime scene. Clara stood near the base of the grand staircase, her arms wrapped tightly around her own waist as two uniformed officers moved through the house, securing the perimeter and checking the broken front door. Julian sat slumped on the bottom step, handcuffed with his hands behind his back, staring blankly at the polished hardwood floor as if he had completely detached from reality.

David stood near the front window, speaking in hushed tones with the lead detective on the scene, explaining the forced entry and the intruder who had just fled into the woods.

“Mrs. Vance?” a tall, middle-aged detective asked, walking over to Clara with a thick plastic clipboard in hand. “I’m Detective Miller. I need to ask you a few questions about the forged deeds and the financial transactions linked to your husband’s accounts.”

Clara swallowed hard, her throat painfully dry. She looked down at Julian, who didn't even bother to look up when the detective mentioned the word forged. The man she had shared a bed with for over a decade, the father of her child, was nothing more than a stranger who had built a life out of smoke and mirrors.

“My signature was forged on every single mortgage document, Detective. I didn't know anything about the loans, the debts, or the properties he leveraged,” Clara said, her voice remarkably steady despite the chaotic storm raging inside her chest.

Detective Miller nodded sympathetically, making a quick note on his clipboard.

“We have reason to believe Mr. Vance was also liquidating secondary assets and preparing to flee the jurisdiction tonight. We recovered two unauthorized passports and international plane tickets in his jacket pocket,” the detective added, glancing down at Julian.

Julian flinched at the mention of the passports, finally lifting his head to look at Clara with a look of desperate, pathetic plea.

“Clara, please tell them it was a misunderstanding. Tell them we can work this out together! Think of Lily!” Julian cried out, his voice cracking with ugly desperation.

Clara didn't flinch. She looked down at him with eyes as cold as winter stone.

“Lily is asleep in the other room, Julian. She is safe because my brother got here in time. You didn't care about her safety when you packed that second passport for Zurich,” Clara said, her voice devoid of any remaining mercy.

Detective Miller signaled to the two uniformed officers standing nearby.

“Get him up. Let’s get him down to the station for booking before the federal marshals arrive to take over the wire fraud charges,” the detective instructed.

As the officers hauled Julian to his feet and led him toward the open front door, past the shattered molding and the lingering scent of expensive wine, Julian cast one last, pleading look over his shoulder. The heavy metal handcuffs clicked rhythmically against the doorframe as he was escorted out into the flashing lights of the cruiser.

Clara watched him go, feeling a strange, heavy weight lift off her shoulders, replaced by the daunting reality of picking up the shattered pieces of her life. David walked over, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.

“You did the right thing, sis,” David said softly.

Before Clara could answer, a piercing, frantic scream echoed from the dark living room down the hall, followed by the sound of rushing footsteps and a frantic voice shouting, “Mommy!”
