Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guests

The violent pounding on the front door rattled the glass panes in the sidelights, shattering the fragile tension inside the foyer. Julian froze completely, his fingers still clutching the Zurich plane tickets as if they were a life raft in the middle of a freezing ocean. Clara released her grip on his collar, stepping back with a sharp intake of breath. The men outside weren't police officers; their voices were rough, impatient, and laced with a menacing urgency that suggested they had no intention of waiting for an eviction notice.

“Julian Vance! Open the door right now, or we kick it off the hinges!” a gruff voice roared from the porch, followed by another heavy thud that shook the entire frame of the house.

Julian scrambled to his feet, his face entirely devoid of color, looking desperately toward the back service exit that led to the garage.

“Who are they?” Clara demanded, blocking his path to the kitchen with an unyielding stance. “Are these more of your business partners, Julian? Or are these the people you borrowed loan-shark money from?”

“Please, Clara, get Lily and go out the back window. Now!” Julian whispered frantically, his voice cracking as he tried to push her toward the hallway. “They aren't here for negotiations. They’re here for the bearer bonds I had to surrender as collateral three days ago.”

“Bearer bonds?” Clara repeated, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief. “What bearer bonds? My father’s estate didn't leave us bearer bonds, Julian! Those were municipal development funds earmarked for the community foundation!”

The front door groaned loudly as a heavy boot slammed directly against the deadbolt, splintering the aged oak frame and cracking the decorative molding around the lock. The door swung open halfway, revealing two burly men in dark jackets, their faces obscured by the shadows of the porch overhang. Without hesitation, the larger of the two men stepped across the threshold, his heavy boots scuffing the pristine hardwood floor of the foyer.

“Times up, Vance,” the man growled, his eyes darting past Julian to lock directly onto Clara and the dark hallway leading to the living room. “Where are the certificates? You said you had them locked in the study safe.”

Julian raised his hands defensively, backing away until his spine hit the mahogany side table.

“I don't have them here! My wife changed the combination on the wall safe this afternoon! I can't open it!” Julian lied desperately, throwing Clara directly under the bus to save his own skin.

The intruder slowly shifted his cold, calculating gaze toward Clara, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his scarred face. He reached inside his jacket, his hand resting casually on the heavy bulge beneath his arm.

“Well, Mrs. Vance,” the man said smoothly, taking a slow step in her direction. “Looks like you’re going to help us open that safe right now, or things are going to get very unpleasant for that little girl sleeping in the other room.”
