Chapter 5 - The Hidden Passport

Clara’s fingers curled around the edge of the hidden pocket inside Julian’s discarded designer suit jacket. The bulk of the envelope inside was unmistakable—it wasn't bills or receipts, but travel documents. Her breath hitched in her throat as she slowly pulled the thick manila envelope out from the lining, making sure the rustling paper didn't wake Lily, who was still tossing restlessly on the living room sofa. Clara walked quietly into the dimly lit hallway, away from the crumpled heap that was her husband, and slid the contents out under the glow of the wall sconce.
Two first-class one-way tickets to Zurich sat atop a stack of freshly printed bank statements and two brand-new secondary passports bearing Julian’s photograph under an alias, alongside a smaller passport for a child.
Clara’s blood ran instantly cold, freezing in her veins as her mind raced to connect the terrifying dots. He wasn't just trying to save the house or secure a bridge loan; he was planning to run away. He had planned to abduct Lily and flee the country, leaving Clara behind to face the angry creditors, the lawsuits, and the legal fallout alone.
She marched back into the entryway, where Julian was still slumped against the wall, nursing his bruised ego and whispering frantic apologies to the empty hallway. Clara didn't scream this time. Screamers lacked control, and right now, Clara possessed a terrifying, hyper-focused clarity. She dropped the passports and the Zurich plane tickets directly onto Julian’s lap with a sharp slap.
Julian flinched violently, looking down at the documents as if they were venomous vipers. All the color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking older, weaker, and utterly pathetic.
“Zurich?” Clara asked, her voice dangerously calm, devoid of any human warmth whatsoever. “You were going to take our daughter and leave me behind to take the fall for your federal fraud charges?”
Julian scrambled backward on the hardwood floor, frantically trying to grab the papers and hide them behind his back.
“Clara, wait! That’s not what it looks like! That was a contingency plan! Just in case Marcus Vance and his associates threatened our physical safety!” Julian lied frantically, his voice pitching upward in sheer panic.
“Stop lying!” Clara snapped, her hand shooting out to grab him by the collar of his ruined white shirt, hauling him up against the wall with surprising strength. “You were running away. You packed a second passport for Lily. You were going to steal my child!”
Julian’s eyes darted around the room like a trapped animal, realizing that every single one of his carefully constructed exits had been firmly bolted shut. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out, only a pathetic, choked gasp.

Before Clara could demand any further answers, the harsh glare of headlights swept across the front windows, casting erratic shadows against the dining room wall. Heavy, rhythmic pounding echoed from the front door, accompanied by the urgent, muffled shouting of unfamiliar men demanding entry.
