Chapter 3 - Shadows at the Door

The piercing ring of the landline echoed through the darkened hallways, stopping Clara dead in her tracks. She looked back at Julian, who stood motionless by the base of the stairs, his eyes locked on the blinking red light as if it were a venomous snake. The house, which had stood as a monument to their supposed success for over a decade, suddenly felt less like a home and more like a gilded cage. Clara carefully set a sleepy Lily down on the plush living room sofa, draping a velvet throw blanket over her shoulders before whispering for the little girl to keep her eyes closed.
“Are you going to answer that, Julian, or should I?” Clara asked, her voice dangerously quiet as she walked back toward the kitchen.
Before Julian could move, the phone stopped ringing abruptly, cutting off mid-ring. A heavy thud echoed from the front porch, followed by the distinct metallic scrape of a key sliding into the exterior deadbolt. Clara froze, her hand hovering just inches from the kitchen counter. Julian lunged forward, moving with a sudden, desperate panic that he hadn't shown all evening.
“Don’t touch the door! Stay back!” Julian hissed, sprinting past Clara to intercept the entryway.
The front door swung open with a slow, agonizing creak, revealing a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark trench coat standing on the porch. The porch light illuminated his sharp features and the cold, humorless smile playing on his lips. It wasn't a police officer or a process server; it was Marcus Vance, Julian’s primary financial backer and the man whose name had flashed on Julian’s phone only twenty minutes earlier.
“Good evening, Julian. I see the dinner party wrapped up early,” Marcus said smoothly, stepping past a paralyzed Julian without waiting for an invitation.
Marcus's eyes scanned the opulent foyer before landing on Clara, who emerged from the kitchen with a posture of pure defiance. Marcus offered a polite, deeply unsettling nod of acknowledgment.
“Mr. Vance, you have no right to enter this house at this hour,” Clara said, stepping firmly between the stranger and the living room where Lily was resting.
Marcus chuckled softly, reaching inside his coat pocket to pull out a thick manila folder. He didn't look at Clara; instead, he fixed his gaze entirely on Julian, whose face had gone completely gray.

“Rights, Mrs. Vance, are a luxury bought and paid for with liquid capital. Your husband stopped paying for those privileges months ago,” Marcus said calmly, flipping open the folder to reveal a stack of legal deeds. “And since the collateral on his multi-million dollar loan defaults tonight, I am officially taking possession of the premises. You have until sunrise to pack your bags.”
