Chapter 6: The Packed Suitcase

The walk back to the master walk-in closet felt like a death march. Julian stumbled into the vast, impeccably organized space where hundreds of custom-tailored suits, handmade Italian shoes, and silk ties hung in neat, symmetrical rows. His hands shook violently as he pulled a leather duffel bag from the upper shelf, dropping it clumsily onto the center island. Twenty minutes, her voice echoed in his mind, ticking away like a digital bomb. He swept his arm across a row of hangers, sending a dozen expensive shirts cascading to the floor, too panicked to fold anything properly. He grabbed whatever underwear, socks, and casual wear he could reach, stuffing them haphazardly into the dark leather bag. His mind raced frantically, trying to calculate his remaining liquid cash. He reached for his wallet, pulling out his platinum credit card, only to remember the crimson warning screen on his phone. He tried to log into his secondary offshore accounts via his laptop on the closet island, but the screen flashed an identical access denial notice. Vanguard’s cyber-security division moved faster than any human prosecutor; they had already locked every financial portal connected to his social security number. Sweat beaded on Julian’s forehead, dampening his neat hair as the reality of absolute ruin began to set in. He was a man who defined his entire existence by his net worth, his luxury real estate, and his social standing among the Manhattan elite. Without his wealth, he was nobody—a handsome face in a cheap brown suit with nothing to his name. He zipped the duffel bag with a violent yank, the zipper catching on the fabric before he forced it through. He glanced at his watch: 9:18 AM. Twelve minutes left before the smart locks activated and locked him out of his own life forever. He hoisted the heavy bag over his shoulder, his expensive leather loafers clicking hollowly against the marble floor as he hurried back toward the foyer where Elena was quietly feeding Leo with a bottle of warm formula.
