Chapter 3: The Cold Dismissal
Instead of engaging in a shouting match or demanding immediate answers about the woman in the green silk dress, Elena looked down at the sleek smartphone glowing in her left hand. Her thumb swiped across the screen with smooth, practiced efficiency, dismissing a high-priority notification from the Vanguard family trust department. Julian watched her thumb move, a cold dread pooling in his stomach as he recognized the interface of her private banking app. He knew that phone; he had watched her use it to authorize multi-million dollar acquisitions with a mere touch of her biometric scanner. Elena ignored Julian completely, treating him as if he were a minor household nuisance rather than a cheating husband caught red-handed. She looked back down at the screen, her expression unreadable in the morning sunlight. Julian took another desperate step toward her, his hand outstretched, but Elena cut him off before he could utter another syllable of his rehearsed apologies. Her voice was steady, quiet, and devoid of any emotional tremor as she delivered the first instruction of the morning. "Go home and make your own lunch," she said smoothly, her tone carrying the chilling weight of finality. Clara flinched at the dismissal, her cheeks burning with a hot flush of humiliation. Julian felt a sudden surge of indignation mixed with sheer terror. He was a senior partner at his firm, a man used to giving orders and demanding respect from junior staff, yet here he was, being dismissed like an errant schoolboy in his own foyer. He opened his mouth to protest, to remind her of who paid the mortgage on this penthouse, though he knew deep down that Vanguard capital had funded every single brick and glass pane of the luxury building. Elena didn't wait for his reply. She tapped the screen twice more, confirming a series of background commands that would fundamentally alter the trajectory of their lives forever, treating the entire domestic betrayal as a simple administrative error requiring immediate cleanup.
