Chapter 10: The Confrontation at the Office

Driven by a desperate, suicidal impulse, Julian caught a crowded subway downtown the following morning, wearing the same wrinkled brown suit he had worn on the day of the reveal. He pushed past the security turnstiles of the Vanguard Global Logistics tower, his old security badge predictably flashing a red error light at the glass gates. However, the new front desk receptionist recognized his face from an internal memo and pressed a silent alarm, though she didn't stop him as he stepped into the private express elevator. He rode the car all the way to the executive penthouse floor, his hands slick with cold sweat. When the doors slid open, he expected to find security guards waiting to drag him out. Instead, he found Elena sitting behind a massive glass desk overlooking the Manhattan skyline, reviewing architectural blueprints with two senior legal partners. She looked up calmly as Julian stepped out of the elevator, her expression completely devoid of anger, which made it infinitely more terrifying. The two lawyers glanced at Julian with mild professional curiosity before gathering their folders and walking quietly toward the exit, leaving the former spouses alone in the vast, sunlit office. Julian walked forward, his legs feeling like lead, stopping ten feet away from the pristine glass desk. "Elena, please," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "You can't do this. You're destroying everything we built together." Elena set her golden pen down on the blueprints with a soft click. She looked up at him, her dark eyes steady and clear. "We didn't build anything together, Julian," she said softly, her voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable authority. "I built an empire, and you tried to siphon off its foundation to fund a shallow mistress who wouldn't look at you twice if your bank accounts were empty." Julian flinched as if he had been physically struck. "I made a mistake," he pleaded, taking another step forward. "I was foolish, I admit it. But we have a family. Think of Leo." Elena stood up slowly from her leather chair, smoothing down the front of her tailored silk blouse. "I am thinking of Leo," she replied quietly. "That is precisely why you are no longer in this building, and why you will never set foot in our home again. The forensic audit goes to the district attorney's office at noon. Your choices have consequences, Julian. Live with them."
