Chapter 8

The air in the lounge grew instantly heavy, charged with unspoken violence. The two security guards flanking Richard moved with practiced precision, blocking the primary exit of the archway. The night concierge was nowhere in sight, likely warned away or paid off in advance.

Julian stepped in front of Clara defensively, his jaw clenched. "It's over, Richard. The financial records are already backed up on an external server off-site. Even if you silence us here, the federal investigators will have the complete audit by morning."

Richard chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound that lacked any warmth. "My dear nephew, you always were an optimist. Do you really think I didn't anticipate your little digital insurance policies? The moment you logged into the home network tonight, my cybersecurity team isolated your IP address and wiped every remote backup linked to your account."

Ryan’s face paled. He reached into his briefcase and pulled out the flash drive, holding it up like a talisman. "What about this? Physical hardware. You can't wipe a flash drive over the internet."

Richard glanced at the metallic drive in Ryan’s hand, his smile widening just a fraction. "Indeed. Which is why Marcus is going to take it from you, right before security escorts you both out through the service alley for a very unfortunate, fatal late-night accident."

Marcus stood up slowly from the leather booth, rolling his shoulders as he stepped around the table toward Ryan. His eyes were cold, devoid of any familial hesitation.

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs, but her mind raced furiously. She knew they couldn't fight two trained security guards in hand-to-hand combat. They needed a distraction, and they needed it immediately. Her hand slipped quietly into the pocket of her dark evening dress, her fingers wrapping around the smooth glass casing of her smartphone.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Richard," Clara said, her voice ringing out clearly across the quiet lounge, cutting through the jazz music. "Every word you've said for the past two minutes has been recorded."

Richard paused, his gaze shifting sharply toward her. He narrowed his eyes. "What did you say?"

Clara pulled the phone out of her pocket, displaying the active recording interface on the screen. "Live stream to a cloud-based legal archive with automated public dissemination protocols enabled. If my phone loses connection, or if anything happens to us in this hotel, the audio file of your confession goes straight to every major news outlet and federal prosecutor in the state."

The silence in the lounge became absolute. Marcus stopped midway across the floor, looking nervously toward Richard for instructions.

Richard’s face hardened into a mask of pure venom. The polished facade of the corporate executive dropped entirely, revealing the desperate predator underneath. "Take the phone from her," Richard commanded the guards, his voice snapping like a whip. "Now!"
