THE MIRROR OF LIES / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1

The chandelier of the Grand Meridian Hotel cast a cold, crystalline light across the polished marble floor. Clara stood trembling in her dark evening dress, mascara carved in dark tracks down her pale cheeks. Her breath hitched in her chest as the raw weight of betrayal settled over her. Four years of a quiet, stable life had evaporated into ash in less than a single minute. She stared furiously at the man standing right before her, the man she had loved, trusted, and called her husband.

"Four years of marriage and this is how I find out?" Clara’s voice shook with a dangerous mix of intense grief and blistering anger.

The man in the dark suit stared back at her, a small cut and a dark bruise marging the skin near his left temple. He looked completely bewildered, his eyes darting from her tear-stained face down to the glowing screen of her smartphone. The display held a crisp, undeniable wedding photo of Clara standing beside a groom in a tailored tuxedo.

"Who are you? ... Where did you get that picture?" The man’s voice lacked the cold edge of a guilty cheat; it held genuine, unsettling confusion.

Before Clara could demand an explanation for his absurd denial, the revolving glass doors of the hotel lobby hissed open. A draft of chilly night air swept inside. Through the glass, a second man walked briskly into the lobby, carrying a heavy black leather briefcase. He wore an identical dark blue suit and tie. His posture, his height, and the sharp angle of his jaw were an absolute mirror image of the man standing right beside Clara.

Clara watched with a hollow, broken expression. Her mind reeled as the second man stepped past the concierge desk, completely unaware of the tense drama unfolding near the central fountain.

The newly arrived man stopped dead in his tracks. He blinked, staring at the small group assembled by the marble pillar. Ryan, the man who had claimed ignorance moments ago, snapped his head toward the newcomer. The identical stranger in the blue suit took a slow, hesitant step forward, his brow furrowing deeply in utter disbelief.

"Ryan?" the newcomer whispered, his voice pitching with shock.

Ryan stared at his duplicate, his mouth parting slightly. "Why do you look like me?"

Clara and a woman in a shimmering evening gown standing near the pillars stared in absolute horror. The two identical men stood face-to-face under the glittering lights, separated by only a few feet of polished stone.

"You know her? What is happening?" Clara breathed, her voice trembling with rising panic.

Ryan kept his eyes locked on his double, his face pale as paper. "You're supposed to be dead."
