Chapter 12

Julian kept his hands folded neatly in front of him, his gaze fixed on the worn linoleum floor before slowly rising to meet Clara’s eyes. The sterile fluorescence of the precinct room cast harsh shadows across his face, stripping away any illusion of the charming, confident architect she had believed him to be for four years.

"They're moving me to the courthouse in twenty minutes," Julian said, his voice quiet and steady.

Clara remained standing by the metal table, her arms crossed defensively over her chest. "I spoke with the detective. You're facing serious charges, Julian—or whatever your real name is."

"It's Julian," he answered softly. "Julian Vance. That part, at least, was never a lie. I was born with that name, even if I stole it back from the grave to survive."

"You stole a lot more than a name," Clara said, her voice carrying a sharp, quiet sting. "You stole four years of my life. Every anniversary, every shared dream, every home-cooked meal, every 'I love you'—all of it was built on the foundation of another man's stolen identity. How could you look me in the eye every single day and pretend that everything was real?"

Julian winced, taking a slow, painful step toward her, though he stopped when he saw her flinch. "Because it was real to me, Clara. That’s the most tragic part of all of this. When I met you at that art gallery four years ago, I was broken, terrified, and running for my life. I didn't plan to fall in love with you. But the days we spent together, the quiet mornings in our home, the way you laughed when I burned the Sunday pancakes—those were the only genuine moments of my life. I was terrified that if I told you the truth, you would walk away. And I was too cowardly to lose you."

A single tear slipped down Clara’s cheek, but she didn't wipe it away. She felt a profound, aching sorrow for the love they had shared, knowing now that it was poisoned by a fundamental deception.

"A relationship can't survive in the shadow of a stolen life, Julian," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Trust isn't something you can build on a foundation of quicksand and forged documents. When you lie about who you are from the very first second, every subsequent word becomes a question mark."

Julian closed his eyes, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. He nodded slowly, accepting the verdict without defense or excuse. "You're right. I knew that deep down every single day we were together. I was living on borrowed time and borrowed grace. I don't expect you to forgive me, Clara. I just needed to hear you say it out loud so I can finally stop running."

A sharp knock sounded at the door, and the detective poked his head inside. "Time’s up, Mr. Vance. We have to move."

Julian opened his eyes, taking one last, lingering look at Clara as if trying to commit her face to memory for whatever long road lay ahead of him. Then, without another word, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving her alone in the quiet silence of the precinct.
