Chapter 3

The manager of the Grand Meridian Hotel finally stepped forward, his expression a tight mask of professional anxiety. He cleared his throat politely, looking at the small, devastated cluster of people blocking the main thoroughfare. "Pardon me, sir, madam, but perhaps you could take this private discussion upstairs to a suite, or outside. We have other guests—"

"Stay out of this, Arthur," Julian snapped, his voice dropping its previous confusion and hardening into a sharp, commanding tone that Clara had heard a thousand times during business arguments. It was a tone that sent a chill straight down her spine.

Ryan, the man with the briefcase, scoffed bitterly. "Still giving orders like you own the world, Julian? Just like you owned my corporation, my bank accounts, and the woman I was supposed to marry."

Clara felt the breath leave her lungs. She gripped the edge of a nearby marble planter to steady herself. "You knew," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She stared directly at Julian, whose jaw was clenched tight. "You knew all along. The wedding, the house in the suburbs, the anniversary trips. Every single moment of our marriage was built on a stolen identity."

Julian finally looked at her, his eyes dark with a desperate, defensive plea. "Clara, listen to me. It wasn't planned like that. Not at first. After the crash on Route 9, everything went black. When I woke up in that rural clinic, my memories were scrambled. They called me Ryan because of the wallet in my pocket—the wallet I picked up by mistake in the diner before we hit the black ice. By the time my real memories started trickling back months later, I had already met you. I had fallen in love with you. I couldn't break your heart by telling you I was living a lie."

"So you just kept playing the part?" Ryan demanded, stepping so close to Julian that their shoulders nearly brushed. "You enjoyed playing house with my life while I was locked in a physical therapy ward two states away, relearning how to walk because you left me in the wreckage?"

"I didn't leave you!" Julian shouted back, a flash of genuine anger breaking through his composure. "The car was sinking. I pulled myself out, and when I tried to reach back for you, the door jammed as the vehicle went under. I thought you were dead, Ryan! I thought I was the only one who made it out!"

The lobby went dead silent again. The raw, agonizing truth hung in the air, thick and suffocating. Clara looked from one man to the other, her heart shattering into smaller and smaller pieces. The romance she had cherished for four years was tainted by cowardice and deceit, yet beneath the wreckage lay a twisted story of survival, amnesia, and profound human failure.

"We need to sit down," Clara said coldly, her tears finally drying, replaced by a steely, resolute numbness. "Not in a suite. Not in private. We need to look at every single document, every medical record, and every lie from the very beginning."
