Chapter 9 - The Race Against the Code

The terminal screen instantly flashed a blinding crimson warning: SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. OVERRIDE SEQUENCE ENGAGED FROM EXTERNAL SOURCE. Richard let out a guttural roar of fury, abandoning all pretense of aristocratic calm as he grabbed the revolver from his lap and leveled it directly at the boy’s chest.

Stop the upload! Richard screamed, his finger tightening against the trigger until the metal mechanism clicked ominously. I swear to God, I will put a bullet through his heart before you can take another step, Clara!

Clara didn't hesitate. Ignoring the burning pain in her thighs, she lunged forward with a desperate burst of adrenaline, slamming her shoulder directly into her father’s side just as the revolver discharged. The bullet punched a jagged hole into the concrete ceiling high above them, showering the server racks with a cascade of grey dust and glittering debris.

Richard stumbled backward, his shoulder crashing against the edge of the metal desk, knocking the keyboard clattering to the floor. The terminal screen continued its relentless progress bar, ticking upward from forty-two percent to forty-three percent.

You’re insane! Richard gasped, clutching his bruised ribs with one hand while trying to reach for a secondary backup switch located beneath the console. You’re destroying everything your grandfather built!

My grandfather built an empire on blood and lies, the boy countered, standing over the fallen billionaire with fists clenched at his sides. And you spent twenty years turning my family’s legacy into a cage for an innocent girl just to cover up your cowardice. It ends tonight, Richard.

The progress bar hit ninety-nine percent. The humming sound of the server racks began to pitch upward into a high-pitched, deafening whine as the master terminal prepared to purge the global medical database and lock the vault’s blast doors permanently from the inside.

Clara reached down, snatching the discarded flash drive from where it had fallen near the keyboard. Her eyes met her father’s for the final time, seeing not a monster, but a broken, pathetic man trapped in the labyrinth of his own paranoia.

Dad, look at me, Clara said softly, her voice steady and resolute. You tried to break my body so I would never leave you. But you forgot that the human spirit doesn't need your permission to stand up.

The screen flashed a brilliant, blinding emerald green. UPLOAD COMPLETE. SYSTEM SECURED.

Before Richard could lunge for the secondary switch, the heavy steel vault doors began to slide shut automatically, sealing them inside a tomb of humming servers and absolute, irreversible justice.
