Chapter 13 - The Second Pillar

The shockwave from the downtown explosion hit the estate seconds later, rattling the tall French windows of the mansion and sending a flock of startled pigeons scattering from the oak trees. Clara and her brother broke their embrace, turning their gaze toward the horizon where the iconic silhouette of the Sterling Global tower was now venting thick, oily smoke from its upper floors.

That wasn't a standard server malfunction, Vance said, pulling his radio closer to his ear as frantic voices babbled across multiple emergency frequencies. The downtown mainframe was rigged with a dead-man's switch. If Richard was arrested, a secondary protocol automatically initiates a complete structural and digital demolition.

He didn't just want to hide his secrets, Clara said, her voice turning ice-cold as she stared at the burning skyscraper in the distance. He wanted to make sure nobody could ever rebuild what he destroyed.

Her brother reached down, picking up the manila envelope and the rusted key fob that had fallen to the concrete. He slipped the micro-SD card back into its housing with a practiced click. Not everything was stored on that mainframe, Clara. My grandfather built a physical archive beneath the old warehouse on the east side—the one your father forgot hasn't been demolished yet. Every financial ledger, every land deed, every medical trial record Richard tried to erase is still sitting in those filing cabinets.

Then we’re going there, Clara said, turning back toward the mansion without a trace of hesitation in her step. She walked with a steady, determined gait, her glittering shoes catching the morning light as she climbed back up the steps to retrieve her coat.

Vance stepped into her path, holding up a hand in warning. Clara, you can't just walk into an unsecured industrial zone while the city is on lockdown. The federal authorities are already taking control of the investigation.

My father spent my entire life treating me like a prisoner in a glass cage because he was terrified of the truth coming to light, Clara said, her eyes flashing with a fierce, unmistakable authority that mirrored Richard’s best corporate moments, minus the cruelty. And now that I can walk, I’m going to finish what my mother started twenty years ago. Are you going to arrest me for wanting justice, detective, or are you going to give us a ride?

Vance stared at her for a long moment, weighing the legal ramifications against the undeniable human reality of the situation. Slowly, a grim smile touched the corners of his weathered mouth.

The squad car is parked right out front, Vance said, turning toward the driveway. And my shift doesn't end for another two hours.
