Chapter 10 - The Echoes of the Vault

The heavy steel doors of the underground vault met with a deafening, hydraulic thud that sealed off the outside world completely. The green glow from the master terminal washed over the room, casting an eerie, aquatic light across the concrete floor where Richard Sterling lay slumped against the base of the primary server rack. The revolver had skidded across the smooth surface, coming to rest near the toe of Clara’s glittering shoe.

You locked us in, Richard muttered, his voice sounding hollow and defeated as he stared up at the reinforced ceiling. There’s no manual override from the inside. The ventilation system operates on a forty-minute timer. When the air runs out, it runs out for all of us.

The boy walked over to the terminal, his fingers moving across the backup diagnostic panel with practiced familiarity. He didn't look panicked; instead, he pulled a small, modified circuit board from his pocket and began wiring it directly into the master motherboard.

My grandfather left me the architectural schematics of this bunker before your father had him silenced, the boy said without looking up. There’s an exhaust shaft behind the secondary cooling unit. It leads directly to the estate’s drainage system. We have thirty-five minutes before the automatic fire suppression floods this room with nitrogen gas.

Clara took a deep, steady breath, testing her legs once more. The pain was receding, replaced by a warm, steady strength that seemed to radiate from her core outward to her fingertips. She walked over to her father, kneeling down beside him on the cold concrete, ignoring the expensive wool of his suit jacket.

Why, Dad? she asked, her voice cracking slightly with a sorrow that thirty-five minutes of oxygen couldn't erase. Why did you make me believe I was broken when I was never even hurt?

Richard turned his head away, staring at the humming server rack as if searching for a line of code that could rewrite his life. Because if you could walk, Clara, you would have left. Just like your mother tried to do the night of the crash. I couldn't bear the thought of being abandoned by the only two people I ever loved. So I made sure neither of you could ever run away again.

Clara’s eyes filled with tears, but she didn't cry out. She placed her hand gently over her father’s trembling fingers, feeling the cold metal of his wedding band pressing against her palm.

Mom didn't want to leave you because she hated you, Dad, Clara whispered, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down her cheek. She was trying to get help for you. She knew about the paranoia before anyone else did. You destroyed our family to protect yourself from a ghost of your own making.

Before Richard could answer, the terminal screen beeped sharply, and a robotic voice echoed through the vault's hidden speakers: EXTERNAL ACCESS GRANTED. LOCAL POLICE OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.

The massive steel vault door groaned, releasing its hydraulic seal and swinging slowly outward to reveal Detective Vance standing in the doorway with a tactical extraction team behind him, their flashlights cutting through the settling dust.
