Chapter 12 - The Hidden Beneficiary

The parchment paper fluttered slightly in the morning breeze as Clara stared at the faded ink of her mother’s handwriting. The document was an adoption decree, legally filed and sealed twenty-two years ago in a district court across the state line—a document that Richard Sterling had spent millions of dollars keeping hidden from public view and from Clara herself.
Read the name at the bottom, Vance said softly, watching Clara’s eyes scan the lines of legal jargon until they locked onto the final signature block.
Clara’s breath caught in her throat. She slowly raised her gaze from the paper to look across the stone steps at the barefoot boy, who suddenly looked away, his hands balling into tight fists at his sides as if bracing for a blow he had expected his entire life.
You’re my brother, Clara whispered, the words trembling on her lips as the reality of the past twenty years fell into place with devastating precision.
The boy—her brother—did not deny it. He kept his eyes fixed on the distant horizon, where the sun was now fully clearing the eastern rooftops. Richard didn't just ruin my grandfather’s business, he muttered, his voice thick with suppressed emotion. When our mother tried to take me away from the estate after the first corporate scandal, your father had me placed in the foster system under a false name. He told our mother I died of a fever when I was two weeks old. She only found out the truth the night of the crash. That’s why she was arguing with him in the car. That’s why he cut the brakes.
Clara took a stumbling step forward, dropping the manila envelope as she crossed the remaining distance between them and threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his tattered shirt. He froze for a second before his arms came around her, holding her tightly against him as silent tears finally broke through his hardened exterior.
I spent my whole life wondering why I was always so cold, Clara sobbed softly against his shoulder. Why I felt like half of me was missing.
You’re not missing anything anymore, her brother whispered into her hair, his own voice breaking as he held onto the only family he had left in the world. We’re both out of the dark now.
Detective Vance turned away, giving them a moment of privacy as his radio crackled to life with an urgent dispatch from downtown headquarters.
Special Agent Miller, come in, the radio squawked through static interference. We have an unlisted security server pinging from a secondary bunker beneath the corporate tower downtown. It’s initiating an automated data wipe that we can't stop from our end.
Vance frowned, lifting his radio to his mouth. What do you mean you can't stop it? Who’s triggering it from downtown?
May you like
Before the dispatcher could answer, a massive, deafening explosion ripped through the skyline three miles away, sending a thick column of black smoke billowing into the bright morning sky from the glass-and-steel monolith of Sterling Global Industries.
