Chapter 4 - The Iron Grip of Law

The heavy brass knocker on the front door hammered against the oak with deafening rhythm, accompanied by the muffled demand of the local police chief announcing a warrant for questioning. Richard stood frozen in the center of the foyer, his hands still trembling slightly as he stared at the rusted pendant swaying gently from the boy’s fingers. The illusion of absolute control that he had meticulously built, brick by brick, over three decades of ruthless corporate dominance had evaporated in less than an hour.

Mr. Sterling! Open the door in the name of the Minneapolis Police Department! We have a court-ordered warrant to enter the premises!

Clara looked down at her legs, the sudden influx of sensation now giving way to a searing, burning ache as blood rushed back into dormant muscle tissue. She bit her lower lip so hard it drew a bead of crimson, refusing to cry out again. She looked up at the man she had called Dad her entire life, seeing not a protector, but a stranger wrapped in an expensive wool suit.

You lied to me about everything, Clara whispered, the words carrying the weight of a physical blow. The crash, Mom’s death, my legs... you kept me in this chair on purpose, didn't you?

Richard’s face contorted in agony, his protective facade finally cracking down the middle. I did it to save you! he shouted back, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. You don't know what they were going to do to us! If that car hadn't gone off the bridge, they would have taken everything—our name, our legacy, your life!

The boy stepped closer to the front door, his bare feet making no sound against the imported marble floor. He reached out and slid the heavy deadbolt back, turning the iron handle before Richard could lunge across the room to stop him.

The door swung inward, framing the harsh afternoon light and the silhouette of Detective Marcus Vance, whose weathered face wore the grim expression of a man who had seen too many monsters hiding behind designer labels. Behind the detective stood a team of forensic investigators carrying metal cases and digital recording equipment.

Mr. Sterling, Detective Vance said, stepping across the threshold with a pair of silver handcuffs glinting in his right hand. You’re coming with us. And I suggest you don't make the mistake of resisting.

Richard didn't move. He kept his eyes locked on his daughter, who was slowly, miraculously, beginning to lift her hips off the seat of the blue wheelchair, her fingers gripping the wooden console table for balance.

As the cold steel of the handcuffs snapped around Richard’s wrists, the boy leaned down and whispered something directly into Detective Vance’s ear, causing the veteran cop’s eyes to widen in sheer disbelief as he pulled a second, sealed manila folder from his coat pocket.
