Chapter 8 - The Shadow Director

The radio chirp cut through the alley dust like a razor blade. The lead federal investigator raised the device to his ear, his expression hardening instantly as he listened to the frantic dispatch coming from downtown headquarters.

“Repeat that? Say again,” the investigator barked into his collar mic, his eyes darting toward Clara and Marcus.

A sharp intake of breath escaped the agent’s lips.

“Sir, we just received an emergency lockdown notice from the city municipal grid,” the agent reported to his superior. “The corporate board has just appointed an interim CEO. They filed emergency emergency restructuring paperwork five minutes ago under a dormant holding company.”

Clara stepped forward, her high heels sinking deeply into the mud as she grabbed the edge of the agent’s tactical vest.

“Who?” Clara demanded, her voice rising in sheer disbelief. “Who could possibly take over the corporation while my father is sitting in the back of this police vehicle?”

The investigator looked at the tablet, scrolling through the newly populated corporate filing.

“The filing lists a phantom entity registered offshore decades ago,” the investigator read aloud, his eyes widening in shock. “The controlling share was transferred legally twenty minutes ago to an individual operating under the original family trust name: Sterling-Vance Enterprises.”

Marcus let out a slow, heavy breath, his gaze shifting from the investigator to the horizon where the downtown skyscrapers pierced the smoggy sky.

“Vance,” Marcus whispered, the name carrying a dark, venomous weight. “My grandfather’s former business partner. The man everyone thought died in the same fire that destroyed our original headquarters.”

Clara stared at Marcus, the puzzle pieces violently snapping together to form a picture far more sinister than she had ever imagined. Her father hadn’t acted alone; the corporate massacre was a coordinated coup involving multiple conspirators who had been waiting in the shadows for decades.

“If Vance is alive and holds the controlling stake,” Clara said, her voice dropping into a chilling whisper, “he didn’t just inherit the company—he engineered my father’s arrest just to seize total control for himself.”

The lead investigator shook his head, motioning for his tactical team to secure the perimeter.

“We need to move this suspect immediately,” the investigator ordered, gesturing toward the SUV holding Arthur Sterling. “HQ is compromised. We are transporting him to a secure federal holding facility outside city limits.”

As the engines roared to life and the convoy prepared to depart, Arthur rolled down the window one last time, a terrifying, desperate smirk on his face.

“You think you won, Marcus?” Arthur laughed hysterically as the vehicle pulled away. “Vance is coming for everything, and he won’t stop until every single bloodline connected to this company is completely eradicated.”
