Chapter 11 - The Enforcers’ Arrival

The rumble of heavy engines shook the cracked earth of the slum alley, drowning out the crickets and the evening wind. Three matte-black SUVs rounded the corner without headlights, their high-beam auxiliary bars suddenly flashing blinding white, bathing the weathered mudbrick house in an aggressive, sterile glare.
Marcus reacted instantly. He grabbed Clara’s arm, pulling her back against the shadowed exterior wall of the house, while his mother clutched the bundled cloth sack to her chest with unwavering courage.
“They tracked the signal,” Marcus muttered under his breath, his eyes darting frantically across the narrow escape routes of the courtyard. “Vance didn’t waste a single second.”
Heavy doors slammed shut in unison. Footsteps—synchronized, heavy, and deliberate—pounded against the dirt road. The silhouette of several armed men in tactical gear cut through the blinding glare of the headlights, their weapons raised as they fanned out to seal every exit of the alleyway.
Clara gripped the leather-bound ledger tightly against her pink dress, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
“We have nowhere to run,” Clara whispered, her voice tight with a sudden wave of despair. “The federal agents are gone, the phones are monitored, and these men aren’t here to make arrests.”
Marcus didn’t answer right away. He scanned the crumbling brickwork of his family’s home, his mind calculating every possible angle. His gaze locked onto a rusted iron grate set low into the foundation wall—an old drainage and cellar access hatch hidden beneath decades of accumulated dirt and debris.
“Mother, take the ledger,” Marcus commanded urgently, dropping to his knees and beginning to claw at the hardened earth with his bare hands. “Get through the storm cellar hatch. It leads to the old drainage tunnels that run straight under the highway.”
The elderly woman shook her head fiercely, stepping closer to her son.
“I will not leave you here to face them alone, Marcus,” she said, her voice trembling slightly with emotion, yet carrying an unyielding strength.
“You aren’t leaving me,” Marcus insisted, looking up, his eyes shining with unshed tears and fierce determination. “You are protecting the truth. If they take the ledger, everything we fought for dies tonight.”
Clara dropped to her knees beside him, her manicured nails digging into the dirt without hesitation, ignoring the ruin of her designer clothes.
“I’m staying too,” Clara declared firmly, her voice leaving no room for argument. “Vance wants me out of the picture just as much as you. We finish this together.”

Before Marcus could protest, a heavy military-grade flashlight beam sliced through the darkness, illuminating the courtyard wall just inches above their heads, accompanied by the cold, metallic sound of a shotgun bolt racking into place.
