Chapter 12 - The Cellar Descent

The metallic echo of the shotgun bolt racking home sliced through the tense silence of the courtyard, freezing the three of them in the dirt. Heavy tactical boots crunched aggressively on the gravel just outside the threshold of the mudbrick courtyard wall.

“Clear the perimeter! Check every building!” a gruff, modulated voice barked through a tactical radio outside.

Marcus threw all his weight against the rusted iron grate at the base of the foundation. With a sharp groan of protesting metal and crumbling mortar, the hatch popped open, releasing a wave of damp, cool subterranean air mixed with the scent of old earth and stagnant water.

“Go! Now!” Marcus hissed urgently, grabbing the leather-bound ledger from Clara and gently shoving it into his mother’s frail arms.

The elderly woman hesitated for a fraction of a second, her weathered eyes locking onto her son’s dirt-streaked face. Without another word, she lowered herself skillfully into the dark, narrow opening of the storm cellar, disappearing into the shadows below.

Clara moved to follow her, but a heavy hand suddenly clamped down onto her shoulder, spinning her around with terrifying force.

A masked tactical operative stood towering over them, his rifle barrel pointed directly at Marcus’s chest while his free hand maintained a vice grip on Clara’s arm.

“End of the line, corporate princess,” the operative growled, his voice heavily distorted by a communications mask. “Mr. Vance sends his regards.”

Marcus leaped forward with animalistic fury, tackling the operative away from Clara and sending both of them crashing hard into the dirt wall of the mudbrick house. The rifle discharged harmlessly into the night sky, a deafening crack that echoed wildly down the alleyway.

“Clara, run!” Marcus shouted, struggling fiercely against the heavily armored man who pinned him back down into the earth.

Clara stood frozen for a split second, horror gripping her limbs. But the sight of Marcus fighting for his life against insurmountable odds shattered her paralysis. Instead of fleeing into the cellar, she grabbed a heavy wooden crate lying nearby and smashed it with all her remaining strength across the back of the operative’s helmet.

The man grunted, his grip loosening just enough for Marcus to wrench free, deliver a devastating blow to the operative’s jaw, and send the tactical agent collapsing unconscious into the dust.

Marcus stood up heavily, chest heaving, his torn shirt stained with fresh dirt and sweat. He grabbed Clara’s hand, pulling her toward the open cellar hatch.

“We have to move before the rest of them breach the courtyard!” Marcus urged, pulling her down into the darkness just as heavy boots swarmed the outer gate.

They dropped down into the pitch-black subterranean tunnel, pulling the rusted iron grate shut above them just as a barrage of heavy fists began pounding furiously on the metal from the outside.
