Chapter 15 - The Corporate Dawn

The absolute darkness of the underground vault pressed in from every side, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the distant, rhythmic dripping of subterranean water. Clara froze, her hand hovering just above the leather-bound ledger resting on the oak table. Marcus moved instantly through the blackness, his calloused hands finding her shoulder to steady her against the sudden panic.
“Don’t move,” Marcus whispered softly right beside her ear, his breath warm in the freezing air. “The emergency grid is tied to the municipal backup system. When Vance triggered the blackout downtown, it hit this circuit too.”

A soft, warm amber glow illuminated the room from vintage wall sconces, casting long, dramatic shadows across the towering rows of steel filing cabinets and the historic archives of the Sterling Corporation.
The elderly woman stood calmly beside them, holding the bundled cloth sack as if it contained the universe itself.
“The night is darkest just before the dawn,” she said quietly, her raspy voice carrying a profound, timeless peace. “And the truth has a way of finding the light, no matter how deep men try to bury it.”
Clara looked down at the ledger, feeling the solid, undeniable weight of history resting in her hands. Arthur Sterling was behind federal bars, Julian Vance’s phantom empire was built on foundation walls made of sand, and the true heirs of the enterprise were standing tall in the dirt and the dark, ready to claim their birthright.
Clara lifted her head, meeting Marcus’s intense, devoted gaze with a fierce, unwavering confidence that transcended every class divide, every betrayal, and every lie they had fought through.
“Let’s go home,” Clara said softly, a radiant smile breaking through the grime and exhaustion on her face.
