Chapter 6 - The Secondary Breach

The metallic crash reverberated through the suffocating air of the slum alley, freezing everyone in their tracks. Federal agents drew their weapons, their tactical instincts overriding the relative calm of the recent arrest. Clara clutched the silver pocket watch tighter against her chest, the protective arm of the elderly woman grounding her amidst the sudden chaos. Marcus stepped in front of both women, his bare feet planted in the dirt, his jaw set in rigid alertness.
An agent rushed back from the front of the convoy, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he addressed the lead investigator.
“Sir, we have a massive security breach on the main corporate server network,” the agent reported urgently, holding up a ruggedized tablet flashing crimson alert codes. “Someone within the inner circle just initiated a remote data-wipe protocol. All secondary financial records, offshore accounts, and patent registries are actively vanishing in real time.”
Arthur Sterling, securely locked inside the back of the federal SUV, let out a harsh, triumphant laugh that echoed through the open window.
“You think locking me in cuffs stops the machinery?” Arthur shouted, his voice dripping with venomous arrogance. “The board operates independently of my physical presence. That empire was built to survive a nuclear strike. You’ll never recover the stolen assets!”
Clara felt the blood drain from her face. She pushed past the federal agents, her high heels crunching on the gravel, and stopped right beside the tinted window of the police vehicle.
“What are you talking about?” Clara demanded, pressing her palm against the glass. “Who has the override codes? You were the sole controlling shareholder!”
Arthur leaned toward the glass, his eyes wild with desperate fury.
“I taught you everything about business, Clara, but I never taught you how to trust the right people,” Arthur sneered. “The corporate board isn’t just a group of executives. They are predators who know every secret, and right now, they are burning the evidence to protect themselves—and leaving you completely destitute in the process.”

Before Clara could process the horrifying scope of the betrayal, the tablet in the federal agent’s hand emitted a shrill, continuous tone as the screen completely went black. The remote data-wipe was complete.
