Chapter 5

Forty-eight hours later, the mahogany-paneled boardroom of Sterling Holdings felt nearly as cold as the ballroom floor. Eleanor sat nervously in a plush leather armchair near the massive floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the glittering expanse of the city skyline at dusk. She wore a simple, professional navy blue blouse and dark trousers she had purchased hastily the day before, a stark contrast to the bespoke suits worn by the corporate attorneys and high-powered executives flanking the long oak table.

Marcus Sterling sat at the head of the table, looking considerably older than he had at the wedding, the lines around his eyes etched deeper by the stress of unspooling Julian’s vast web of financial crimes. Clara sat to his right, her face composed behind a thin veil of makeup, though the emotional trauma of the near-fatal deception still lingered in the haunted depths of her eyes. She had not spoken a word since entering the room, her attention focused entirely on a thick manila folder resting on the polished wood before her.

“Let us begin,” Marcus announced, his voice echoing softly in the enclosed space. He gestured toward the corporate counsel, a sharp-faced attorney named Arthur Vance, who immediately stood up and clicked a remote control.

The projector screen at the front of the room flickered to life, displaying a complex web of financial transactions, shell companies offshore accounts, and encrypted chat logs. Arthur cleared his throat, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses before addressing the room.

“Thanks to the primary digital evidence provided by Ms. Vance—excuse me, Ms. Eleanor—our forensic accounting team has managed to map out the full extent of Julian Vance’s conspiracy,” Arthur began, pointing a laser pointer at a series of red connecting lines on the screen. “Julian was not acting alone. He had substantial backing from rival conglomerate Apex Global, headed by Richard Thorne.”

Eleanor leaned forward, absorbing the scale of the corruption. It wasn't just a bitter husband trying to eliminate his bride for inheritance; it was an industrial espionage operation designed to systematically dismantle Sterling Holdings from the inside out. Julian had spent eighteen months worming his way into Clara’s affections, carefully orchestrating his path to the altar with the sole purpose of executing a fatal coup during the toast.

“And where is Julian now?” Clara asked, her voice surprisingly steady, carrying a chilling resolve that commanded the entire room’s attention.

“Currently being held without bail at the county detention center,” Arthur replied cautiously. “He’s refusing to cooperate, but with Eleanor’s unedited video and our financial tracing, his legal team is already advising him to plead guilty in exchange for a slightly reduced sentence.”
