Chapter 10

Three weeks after the chaotic wedding reception that shocked high society, the autumn leaves were turning golden across the sprawling Sterling family estate. The media storm had finally begun to subside, replaced by exhaustive financial news coverage detailing the dismantling of Apex Global and the imminent federal indictments of Richard Thorne and Julian Vance on multiple counts of conspiracy and attempted murder. The board of directors at Sterling Holdings had unanimously appointed Marcus Sterling as permanent chairman with expanded executive powers, while Clara assumed the role of Vice President of Corporate Ethics and Compliance.

Eleanor sat at a wide, polished mahogany desk on the forty-fifth floor of the Sterling Holdings tower, looking out at the bustling city below. She was no longer wearing a black-and-white banquet maid uniform; instead, she wore a sharp, tailored gray blazer and crisp white blouse, having officially accepted Clara’s personal offer to head the newly established Corporate Integrity and Safety Division. Her mother’s medical treatments were now fully covered under the company’s elite healthcare plan, and for the first time in years, the constant weight of financial anxiety had lifted completely from her shoulders.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts, and Clara pushed the glass door open, stepping into the office holding two steaming cups of artisan coffee. She looked radiant, her posture confident and resolute, entirely free of the lingering shadow of her failed engagement.

“Working hard, I see,” Clara smiled warmly, placing one of the ceramic mugs on Eleanor’s desk before taking a seat in the visitor’s chair opposite her.

“Just reviewing the new security protocols for our upcoming charity gala next month,” Eleanor replied with a slight smile, taking a sip of the rich coffee. “I want to make sure every vendor, catering staff member, and guest is vetted thoroughly. No unexpected surprises this time.”

“Good,” Clara laughed lightly, though there was a serious edge to her tone. “If anyone tries to drop anything into a glass at one of our events now, they’ll have to get past a security team trained by federal marshals and supervised by the sharpest eyes in the city.”

The two women shared a quiet, understanding moment of camaraderie forged through fire and shared survival. They were an unlikely pair—a billionaire heiress and a working-class banquet waitress—bound together by an extraordinary act of courage that forever altered the trajectory of their lives.

“Have you heard anything about Julian’s trial prep?” Eleanor asked carefully, setting her coffee cup down.
