Chapter 3

Marcus Sterling’s imposing shadow fell heavily over Julian, cutting off any remaining avenue of retreat. The wealthy patriarch did not raise his voice; power in his world was measured by quiet, devastating authority. He looked down at the puddle of spilled champagne, then shifted his unblinking gaze to Eleanor, who stood her ground without retreating an inch. Marcus recognized competence and courage when he saw it, traits he valued far more than expensive suits and hollow family lineages.
“You,” Marcus addressed Eleanor, his tone softening just a fraction, though it remained sharp as a razor. “What is your name?”
“Eleanor, sir,” she replied clearly, keeping the smartphone raised just enough to ensure the video kept looping in plain sight.
“Eleanor, do you realize the gravity of what you are holding in your hand?” Marcus asked, gesturing toward the screen.
“I do, Mr. Sterling,” Eleanor answered firmly. “I saw him drop the powder. I ran because I knew if he drank it, or if anyone else drank it, people would die. I had to stop it.”
Clara clutched at her veil, her breathing turning shallow and erratic as the full horror of Julian’s intentions washed over her. The man who had whispered sweet promises of eternal devotion under romantic Tuscan sunsets had planned to murder her, or at least frame her father for her sudden, untimely demise to seize control of the Sterling Holdings board of directors. The betrayal cut deeper than any physical wound, turning her porcelain skin cold and numb. She looked at Julian with eyes wide with a mixture of revulsion and profound grief.
“You bastard,” Clara choked out, the tears finally breaking free, rolling in hot tracks down her powdered cheeks. “You were going to kill me.”
Julian finally found his voice, though it sounded thin, cracked, and utterly defeated. He raised his hands defensively, shaking his head in a desperate, futile attempt at damage control. “Clara, listen to me. That video… it’s manipulated. Artificial intelligence, it’s a deepfake! Someone wants to ruin us, to destroy our happiness!”

The sheer absurdity of the excuse hung in the air like a foul odor. Even the most sympathetic guests could see the undeniable continuity between the physical ring on his finger and the digital reflection on the screen. Eleanor didn't bother arguing with his pathetic lie; she simply swiped once on her phone, bringing up the cloud backup notification showing the exact timestamp, GPS coordinates, and unedited metadata of the recording session.
“The metadata is locked and uploaded to a secure server, Mr. Sterling,” Eleanor stated matter-of-factly. “You can’t delete it, and neither can anyone else.”
