Chapter 1

The crystal champagne flute struck the polished marble floor with a sharp, explosive crack, sending golden droplets and sparkling shards flying across the hem of the white lace wedding dress. Clara stood frozen, her veil trembling as the heavy chandeliers above the grand ballroom cast a warm, golden glow over the unfolding chaos. Eleanor, the red-haired waitress with a dusting of freckles across her nose, breathed heavily, her black-and-white uniform slightly rumpled from her frantic sprint across the room. Julian, clad in his immaculate black velvet tuxedo and pristine bow tie, stepped forward, his jaw clenched so tightly that a muscle pulsed violently near his temple. The deafening hum of the three hundred wedding guests vanished, replaced by a suffocating, collective silence that settled heavily over the room.

Eleanor stared down at the pooling champagne, her chest rising and falling beneath her modest maid uniform. She raised her hand to her cheek, the skin stinging slightly from the sudden friction of the chaotic intervention, though she did not feel the physical pain. Julian glared at her, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits, radiating a cold, calculated fury that could freeze boiling water. Eleanor met his gaze without flinching, her green eyes wide with adrenaline and fierce moral clarity. She knew the danger of what she had just done, risking her meager livelihood and perhaps her personal safety, but walking away had never been an option once she saw the tiny glass vial tip over the rim of the crystal flute.

“What is wrong with you?” Eleanor demanded, her voice cutting cleanly through the heavy air of the ballroom, refusing to let intimidation silence her pursuit of the truth.

Clara stepped forward, her face flushing a deep, mottled crimson beneath her delicate veil. The shock of the ruined toast morphed instantly into an incandescent, defensive rage. She pointed a manicured finger directly at the young waitress, her voice shaking with righteous indignation and desperate panic.

“Security, get her out!” Clara shrieked, looking wildly toward the mahogany doors at the back of the hall where two uniformed guards stood rigid.

Before the guards could advance, Eleanor whipped her smartphone from her apron pocket. Her thumb tapped the screen with practiced urgency, bringing up a crisp, high-definition video file. She thrust the glowing screen directly into the faces of the bride and groom. The footage clearly showed Julian’s distinctive signet ring holding a small glass vial, tipping white powder into the very glass of champagne that now soaked the marble floor.

Julian stared at the screen, the color draining completely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in a velvet suit. Clara gasped, her hand flying to cover her mouth as reality crashed down upon her.

“What did you put in my drink?” Julian whispered, the words trembling with horror.
