Chapter 9 - The Unmarked Sedan

The heavy darkness inside the living room felt thick and suffocating, broken only by the harsh, invasive glare of the high-beam headlights streaming through the bay windows. Eleanor froze in the center of the room, her breath catching in her throat as she stared toward the front glass.
"Who... who is that?" Eleanor whispered, her previous arrogance entirely replaced by a cold, primordial dread. "Julian said they wouldn't come here. Not to the house."
Clara pulled Lily tightly against her body, shielding the little girl’s face against her shoulder. "They aren't here to rescue Julian, Eleanor. They’re here to collect whatever digital breadcrumbs he left behind before the feds swept his office."
Detective Miller drew her service weapon with a smooth, practiced motion, the metallic slide clicking sharply in the quiet room. She crouched low near the window frame, using the heavy velvet drapes as cover. "Nobody move. Stay behind the structural wall. I’m calling for backup, but dispatch lines are currently jamming in this sector."
As if on cue, the muffled thud of a heavy boot striking the front porch steps echoed through the entryway. A slow, deliberate knock rattled the brass door handle—not the frantic pounding of a panicked officer, but the rhythmic, chilling cadence of someone who knew the deadbolt was already compromised.
Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her mind remained razor-sharp. She reached into her pocket, her fingers brushing against the cold metal casing of her smartphone. The screen was dark, but a silent background notification was flashing rapidly: Data sync failed. Remote decryption initiated from unknown local node.
Someone inside the property—or parked right outside—was attempting to force-decrypt the local backup files stored on the router in the hallway closet.
"Detective," Clara whispered urgently, keeping her voice low. "The router in the hallway. They aren't just trying to break in physically. They’re tapping our local network to pull the unencrypted decryption keys for the Zurich escrow accounts."

Before Miller could respond, the front door’s smart lock buzzed loudly. A green light flashed across the digital keypad, followed by the mechanical sound of the deadbolt sliding open from the inside.
