Chapter 6 - The Digital Trap

The heavy oak front door clicked shut, muffling the flashing red and blue lights of the sheriff’s cruiser parked in the suburban driveway. Inside the brightly lit living room, the atmosphere shifted from suffocating terror to a chilling, calculated stillness. Eleanor slumped into an antique velvet armchair, her immaculate burgundy dress looking suddenly ill-fitting and frayed against her trembling frame. The heirloom pearl necklace she wore seemed to choke her, and she clawed at the clasp with arthritic fingers until it snapped, scattering tiny white spheres across the polished hardwood floor like scattered teeth.
Clara stood near the mahogany dining table, her hand resting protectively on Lily’s blonde hair. The social worker, a sharp-eyed woman named Detective Miller who doubled as a family services liaison, remained in the room, her tablet glowing softly in the dimming illumination.
"You handled that with remarkable poise, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said, her voice laced with professional respect. "Most spouses in your position completely unravel during the initial extraction. But you had a secondary insurance policy ready before we even arrived."
Clara didn't smile. The battle had only just begun, and the half-million-dollar secret resting safely within the encrypted partition of her phone was just the tip of a very deep, very dark iceberg. She tapped the screen, bringing up a complex network of corporate entities that Julian had spent the last decade building to siphon family assets away from tax authorities and creditors alike.
"Julian wasn't just hiding our personal savings," Clara said quietly, her eyes fixed on Eleanor, who was now weeping silent, desperate tears of humiliation. "He was laundering money through shell corporations registered under fake compliance signatures. And look who the primary beneficiary of the ultimate holding trust is."
She turned the phone around, resting it on the edge of the table facing the older woman. Eleanor refused to look at the screen, squeezing her eyes shut as if sheer willpower could erase the digital paper trail.
"It’s not Julian, is it?" Detective Miller asked, leaning in to read the corporate registry data. "It’s Eleanor. The entire estate, the offshore accounts, the properties—they are all legally owned by her. Julian was just the proxy director taking the legal risks while she pulled the financial strings."
"Bingo," Clara whispered.
Before Detective Miller could process the massive legal implications of corporate fraud intersecting with domestic abuse, Clara’s phone vibrated violently against the wood. A high-priority alert flashed across the top of the display, originating from an automated monitoring script she had coded herself months ago. The system had just detected an unauthorized, high-frequency outbound wire transfer attempt originating from one of Julian’s secondary offshore servers in Zurich.

Someone was trying to clean the vaults right now, while Julian sat handcuffed in the back of a police cruiser.
