Chapter 10 - The Breach

The heavy front door swung wide open, flooding the dark entryway with the blinding white glare of the headlights from the unmarked sedan parked outside. A tall, broad-shouldered figure stepped across the threshold, dressed head-to-toe in tactical black clothing with no insignia, badge, or identifying markers. The intruder moved with chilling efficiency, holding a silenced firearm low and steady as he scanned the darkened hallway.
Detective Miller raised her service weapon from behind the velvet drapes, her voice cutting through the stillness like a razor. "Drop the weapon! Police department! Drop it right now or I will open fire!"
The tactical operative didn't flinch. He didn't drop his gun. Instead, he smoothly pivoted his stance, pointing a small, hand-held frequency scanner toward the hallway closet where the primary home router was housed. A sharp, high-pitched squeal filled the air as the device began aggressively stripping the local network’s encryption keys.
"Clara, get down!" Miller shouted, squeezing the trigger as the intruder swept his weapon toward her position.
The deafening crack of gunfire shattered the living room windows, showering the hardwood floor in a glittering rain of jagged glass. Lily screamed, burying her face deep into Clara’s neck as Clara dropped flat onto the floor, dragging her daughter behind the heavy mahogany dining table.
Eleanor let out a blood-curdling shriek and scrambled backward on her hands and knees, clawing frantically at the scattered pearls on the floor as if they could somehow protect her from the violence unfolding around her.
The tactical operative fired a single suppressive round into the wall above Miller’s head, wood splinters exploding outward like shrapnel. With terrifying speed, he turned toward the hallway closet, punched the lock mechanism with a heavy steel-toed boot, and ripped the casing off the router, tearing out the master flash drive that contained the local backup ledger.
"He has the backup!" Clara yelled over the ringing in her ears, her hand darting into her pocket to check her phone.
The encrypted cloud storage was still holding firm, synced directly to the federal prosecutor’s secure servers downtown, but if the operative extracted the local hardware keys, he could burn down the physical evidence trail before the morning warrants were executed.

Detective Miller recovered her footing, lunging forward from behind the drapes just as the intruder turned toward the front door to retreat. Miller tackled him hard against the doorframe, sending both bodies crashing onto the porch in a violent tangle of limbs and suppressed gunfire.
