Chapter 11 - The Perimeter Falls

The violent scuffle on the front porch ended with a sickening thud as Detective Miller pinned the intruder’s arm behind his back, pressing her knee hard into his spine. But the tactical operative was shockingly strong; with a sudden, explosive twist, he shattered the porch railing, shoved Miller backward off the steps, and sprinted toward the idling black sedan waiting at the curb.

The car’s tires shrieked against the asphalt, leaving dark rubber streaks on the suburban street as it accelerated into the night without its headlights, swallowed instantly by the winding neighborhood roads.

Clara rushed to the doorway, pulling Lily close to her side while keeping a watchful eye on the injured detective. Miller was coughing, dragging herself up the porch steps with a grimace, clutching her left shoulder where a dark stain of blood was slowly soaking through her tactical vest.

"Are you hit?" Clara asked, her voice tight with adrenaline as she helped the officer across the threshold.

"I’ll survive," Miller panted, pressing a hand against her wound. "He got the local router drive, Clara. If he manages to wipe the local cache before our cyber team accesses the cloud backups, Julian’s entire corporate defense team will claim the evidence was tampered with."

Before Clara could reply, a blinding flash of light illuminated the living room. Eleanor was standing near the broken window, holding up Clara’s smartphone, which she had snatched from the dining table during the chaos of the gunfight.

"Give me that," Clara demanded, stepping forward with her hand outstretched.

Eleanor backed away, her face twisted in desperate defiance, clutching the phone against her chest like a lifeline. "No! You think you’ve destroyed us, but you’re just as trapped as we are, Clara. If this phone syncs with the federal server, the entire family name is disgraced forever. Every property, every asset, every account—gone. I’d rather burn it all to the ground than let the state take it!"

"Eleanor, hand over the phone right now," Miller warned, leveling her service pistol at the older woman, her hand shaking slightly from pain and blood loss. "That’s an obstruction of a federal investigation, and I will not hesitate to arrest you right alongside your son."

Eleanor’s hand hovered over the delete button on the main dashboard of Clara’s banking application, her finger trembling as the screen displayed a terrifying prompt: Confirm factory reset and permanent cloud purge?
