Chapter 14 - The Final Confession

The federal prosecutor paused near the broken entryway, tapping his radio receiver to clarify the frantic message crackling through the speaker. The ambient noise of the forensic technicians and paramedics seemed to fade into a dull hum as the dispatcher’s voice echoed clearly through the quiet living room.
"Control to Unit Four... update on detainee Julian Vance. Subject has requested an immediate, unrecorded confession interview with his primary legal proxy—specifically naming Clara Vance. States he has information regarding a secondary hidden asset not listed in the corporate ledgers."
Eleanor stirred slightly from the edge of the dining table, her dull eyes flashing with a final spark of desperate hope. "Julian... he’s protecting what’s left. He knows where the overseas trust is hidden."
Clara didn't flinch. She looked down at the prosecutor, her expression completely resolute. "Tell him I’ll listen. But only if the interview takes place at the county precinct, under official federal recording, with my legal counsel present."
The prosecutor nodded, speaking briefly into his radio before turning back to Clara. "The U.S. Attorney has authorized the meeting. We can head down to the precinct whenever you're ready, Mrs. Vance."
Clara handed the manila folder to Detective Miller for safekeeping, gently adjusted her duffel bag strap over her shoulder, and walked toward the front door with Lily sleeping soundly in her arms. She stepped past the yellow crime scene tape, leaving the shattered birthday cake, the melting pink candles, and the ghosts of her suburban nightmare far behind her.
Thirty minutes later, Clara sat across a cold metal interview table in the sterile, fluorescent-lit holding facility of the county precinct. The heavy steel door clicked shut behind her. Across the table, Julian sat in an orange jumpsuit, his charcoal suit ruined, his handcuffs clanking against the steel surface as he looked up with hollow, defeated eyes.
"You really destroyed everything, Clara," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with exhaustion and raw fury. "Ten years of building an empire, gone in a single night."
"You built a prison, Julian," Clara answered calmly, looking him straight in the eyes without an ounce of fear. "I just finally opened the door."

Julian leaned forward across the table, his face twisting into a bitter, chilling grin. "You think you won? You haven't seen the final line item on page fifteen of the true ledger. The one I didn't even put in the corporate trust."
