Chapter 4

The rain battered the rusted corrugated roof of the old railway station, masking the sound of Clara’s footsteps as she navigated the damp corridors. She left Leo sleeping safely in the back of the locked car, trusting the shadows of the depot to keep him hidden. Her chest still ached from the physical struggle with Eleanor, but her focus remained absolute. The branch of the municipal bank downtown was closed, but Clara possessed the biometric override codes that David had secretly funneled through an encrypted server. She slipped through the side maintenance door, the automated alarm system neutralizing with a soft green beep as her thumbprint matched the pre-programmed clearance. The vault room was a cold, cavernous space lined with rows of numbered steel boxes reflecting the harsh fluorescent overhead lighting. Clara’s heels clicked sharply against the linoleum as she walked down aisle four, stopping in front of box 312. She inserted the physical titanium key, turned it with a sharp click, and dialed the six-digit numerical combination. The heavy door swung open smoothly, revealing a stack of encrypted flash drives, old legal documents proving her original ownership of the Vance patents, and a weathered family photograph of her and her late husband. This was the ammunition she needed to dismantle Eleanor’s empire legally, bypassing the financial blockades. Suddenly, the soft hum of the vault’s ventilation system was interrupted by a heavy thud from the outer hallway. Heavy, synchronized footsteps approached the service door. Eleanor’s security team had found her faster than anticipated. Panic threatened to paralyze her, but Clara forced her breathing to slow down. She grabbed the documents and flash drives, shoving them into her coat pocket, and slipped into the dim recesses of the service corridor just as the heavy vault door was pushed wide open by armed men in tactical gear.
