Chapter 13

Clara stopped ten feet away from Eleanor, the polished marble floor reflecting the harsh fluorescent lights above. The federal agents instinctively tightened their grip around Eleanor, but the older woman raised a single hand, signaling them to pause. Eleanor took a slow, deliberate breath, her posture straightening with a lingering vestige of her former pride. She looked at Clara—not with hatred, but with a strange, weary fascination. "You really brought the whole house down," Eleanor said, her voice raspy and devoid of its usual corporate bite. "You always were the stubbornest person I ever met, Clara." Clara kept her expression neutral, her hands resting quietly in the pockets of her trench coat. "I didn't bring it down, Eleanor. Gravity did. You built an empire on exploitation and deceit, and it simply couldn't support its own weight." Eleanor let out a dry, mirthless chuckle that echoed softly off the marble walls. "And what now? You take the throne? You become the new empress of a fractured kingdom?" "No," Clara replied firmly, her voice carrying across the quiet lobby. "I’m walking away. The patents return to the public trust, the restitution funds go to the workers you exploited, and my son and I finally get to live a life free from your shadow." Eleanor stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, the fierce ambition that had driven her entire life finally extinguishing in her eyes. She turned away, submitting without resistance as the federal agents gently guided her toward the awaiting transport van outside. Clara watched her leave, feeling the last remaining traces of bitterness evaporate from her soul. The war was over, and the scars would remain, but the future was entirely unwritten.
