Chapter 12

The rain had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, starless night as Clara and David pulled up outside the imposing glass facade of Vance Global headquarters. Federal law enforcement vehicles flashed their crimson and blue emergency lights against the polished granite pillars, casting long, erratic shadows across the plaza. Reporters and camera crews crowded the perimeter behind yellow police tape, shouting frantic questions into the cold night air. Clara stepped out of the car, wearing a simple dark trench coat, her posture calm and resolute. Leo remained safely tucked away with a trusted family friend across town, sleeping soundly in a secure environment. As Clara walked toward the grand entrance, a pair of federal agents stopped her, but one of the senior investigators recognized her face from the municipal vault security logs and nodded respectfully, parting the barrier to let her through. Inside the cavernous marble lobby, federal marshals were escorting executive assistants and trembling vice presidents out in handcuffs. Standing near the private elevator banks, surrounded by three federal agents and her high-priced defense attorneys, was Eleanor Vance. The older blonde woman looked drastically different from the untouchable titan of the penthouse balcony. Her black sparkly evening gown was gone, replaced by a simple beige pantsuit; her designer earrings had been removed during the initial processing, and her hair was pulled back in a loose, unstyled knot. She looked older, her face lined with a sudden, devastating vulnerability. As Clara approached, Eleanor turned her head. Their eyes locked across the bustling lobby, the noise of the federal raid fading into a distant hum. There was no anger left between them—only the heavy, silent recognition of a shared history burned to ash.
