Chapter 11

By eight o'clock that evening, the electronic billboards of Times Square flickered simultaneously, cutting away from commercial advertisements to flash breaking news banners across towering displays. Networks interrupted prime-time programming as anchor desks scrambled to digest the terabytes of leaked financial records proving decades of systemic fraud, bribery, and market manipulation orchestrated by Vance Global Holdings. Clara sat in a corner booth of a modest, brightly lit diner three miles uptown, watching the muted television screen above the counter. Leo sat beside her, happily devouring a plate of pancakes and scrambled eggs, entirely insulated from the corporate storm raging outside. The diner was buzzing with hushed whispers and astonished murmurs as patrons stared at their smartphones, reading the explosive reports detailing Eleanor’s illicit empire. David slid into the booth opposite Clara, placing a battered laptop on the Formica table. The screen showed Vance Global stock in a vertical freefall, plummeting over eighty percent in after-hours trading as institutional investors frantically dumped their shares. "The SEC has officially frozen all remaining corporate accounts," David said, his voice laced with cautious optimism. "Federal marshals are currently executing search warrants at Eleanor’s penthouse and corporate headquarters. It’s over, Clara. She has nowhere left to hide." Clara stared at the screen, watching footage of news vans swarming the base of the lit skyscraper where their balcony confrontation had taken place just twenty-four hours earlier. The circle had closed. The woman who had ruled the city with fear and absolute impunity was now facing the very legal machinery she had manipulated for decades. Yet, Clara felt no elation—only a profound, weary sense of closure. The battle was won, but the real work of rebuilding lives from the ashes was only just beginning.
