Chapter 2 - Echoes From Below

The hollow thump resonated up through the floorboards, vibrating against the soles of Mark’s boots and causing little Lily to bury her tear-stained face deeper into the crook of his neck. The heavy silence that followed was entirely different from the polite quiet of the dinner party; it felt oppressive, organic, and desperate. Mark kept his bruised eye locked on Julian, whose hand twitched instinctively toward the silver pocket watch resting against his waistcoat. Julian’s pale cheeks lost a fraction of their color, though the older man quickly masked the micro-expression of panic with a practiced sneer of aristocratic disdain.
“You’re trespassing in a house you never truly belonged to, Mark,” Julian said, his voice raspy and controlled, belying the rapid pulse visible in the heavy vein at his temple. “Clara made a tactical error bringing you back into this estate, and now you’re dragging a troubled child into our private affairs. Put the girl down and sit at the table. We are going to discuss your impending departure from this family.”
Mark didn’t move an inch. He felt Lily’s small fingers curl into the fabric of his green sweatshirt, clutching him with a desperate strength that broke his heart. He refused to let go of her, knowing instinctively that releasing her in this mausoleum of toxic wealth would be signing her execution warrant.
“I’m not leaving,” Mark said quietly, his tone devoid of hesitation. “And neither is Lily. What is down in that cellar, Julian? Who did you lock away beneath the dining room floor?”
Clara stood up slowly from her chair, stepping carefully around the puddle of spilled red wine and glittering crystal shards. Her dark blouse caught the amber glow of the chandelier as she glided toward her father’s side, her posture returning to that of a dutiful soldier reporting for duty. She cast a sidelong glance at the heavy brass-reinforced door located in the dark corner of the pantry alcove—the door that led down into the subterranean foundation of the manor.
“You know nothing about our legacy, Mark,” Clara whispered, her voice dangerously low. “Some secrets are buried because they threaten the very foundation of everything we own. Father built this empire on sacrifices you are far too weak to ever comprehend.”
“Sacrifices?” Mark echoed, a bitter laugh escaping his throat. “You call abusing a six-year-old child and locking people in a basement a legacy? You’re monsters wrapped in expensive wool.”

Before Julian could raise his hand to signal the armed security guards stationed outside the perimeter gates, the heavy brass door in the pantry alcove rattled violently from the inside. A frantic, muffled scratching sound scraped against the thick oak, followed by a human voice calling out a single, desperate name that made Clara freeze in absolute terror.
