Chapter 14 - The Final Breach

The suppressed automatic weapon flashed in the darkness, a rapid, muffled staccato of gunfire spitting lead across the gravel drive. Bullets punched through the body of the nearest state police cruiser with loud, metallic cracks, shattering the windshield and showering the hood with safety glass.
Agent Thomas dropped instantly to one knee, returning fire with three precise shots that pinged off the armored door panel of the oncoming black SUV. “Take cover! Get down!” he roared over the chaotic noise.
Mark slammed the heavy rear door of the federal transport, ensuring Lily and Arthur were safely secured inside the ballistic-reinforced cabin. He ducked behind the thick engine block of the SUV, his bruised eye throbbing as he scanned the treeline for secondary flanking positions. The silent partners weren’t here to negotiate; they were here to wipe the slate clean and recover the encrypted ledger at any cost.
The black luxury SUV screeched to a halt right at the edge of the smoldering courtyard, blocking the only exit down the driveway. The driver’s door opened, and a tall man in an identical charcoal suit stepped out, holding a heavy tactical briefcase identical in make to the one recovered from Clara.
“Hand over the drive, Agent Thomas!” the man called out, his voice calm, cultured, and chillingly devoid of emotion. “You can’t prosecute a ghost, and you certainly can’t audit an international trust that doesn’t officially exist on paper.”
Agent Thomas kept his pistol raised, aiming steadily over the hood of the transport. “It’s already uploaded to the Department of Justice mainframe, counseling is over! The board is finished!”
The man in the suit smiled coldly, stepping into the dim amber light of the burning ruins. He reached inside his jacket, not for a weapon, but for a small detonator switch.
“The mainframe only holds what our servers allow it to receive,” the man said softly. “And your satellite uplink was rerouted through our proxy network twenty minutes ago.”
Before Agent Thomas could process the warning, the portable diagnostic tablet sitting on the hood of the transport sparked violently, its screen flashing a bright, solid red before going completely dark. The encrypted ledger had just been wiped remotely.
Mark didn’t hesitate. Moving with the silent, lethal efficiency of his former undercover training, Mark dropped low, sliding across the gravel past the burning embers of the courtyard. He flanked the gunman from the blind side, lunging forward with explosive force to tackle the operative squarely at the knees before the man could trigger a secondary charge.
The heavy detonator flew from the operative’s hand, skidding across the hot ashes and coming to rest against a smoldering timber beam where the heat instantly fused the plastic casing into useless slag.
The operative struggled fiercely, throwing a hard elbow that caught Mark across the jaw, but Mark pinned him to the ground with iron weight, pressing his forearm hard against the man’s throat until the struggle finally ceased.
