Chapter 10 - The Federal Arrival

The black sedan kicked up a cloud of grey dust as it skidded to a halt beside the county cruisers. The man stepping out of the passenger door wore a crisp charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place amid the burning wreckage of the Vance estate. He flipped open a leather folder, displaying a gold federal badge that glinted in the amber glow of the dying flames.

“Agent Thomas, FBI Special Investigations,” the man announced, his voice sharp and authoritative as he surveyed the chaos. He looked past Sheriff Miller and locked eyes directly with Mark, who was still coughing, his face blackened by soot and his green sweatshirt torn at the shoulder. “Mark. We picked up the automated emergency ping from your secure tracker thirty seconds ago. Where is the evidence?”

Mark pointed a trembling finger back toward the burning ruins of the pantry alcove, where the second-floor library had just collapsed into the subterranean foundation.

“It’s under twenty tons of burning oak and masonry,” Mark said, his voice raspy from smoke inhalation. “Clara went down for the master ledger. She didn't make it back out.”

Agent Thomas frowned, his expression tightening as he pulled a satellite phone from his pocket to bark orders at a tactical unit stationed three miles down the county road. “That ledger contained the cipher keys to the offshore accounts holding fifty million dollars in embezzled pension funds and trafficking kickbacks. If that data is destroyed, we lose the leverage we need to dismantle the entire regional syndicate.”

Sheriff Miller stepped forward, wiping soot from his eyes, looking remarkably relieved that his own digital compromise was now buried beneath a mountain of ash. “You won’t find anything down there, Agent. The structural integrity of the basement was compromised the moment the propane lines blew. The whole foundation is a smoking tomb.”

Mark ignored the federal agent’s panic. He turned away from the burning wreckage and walked slowly back toward the perimeter fence where Deputy Vance was still holding little Lily. The six-year-old blond girl looked up as he approached, her blue eyes wide and questioning in the strobe-light glare of the police cruisers.

Mark dropped to his knees in the gravel, completely ignoring the sharp stones cutting into his jeans, and opened his arms wide. Lily didn’t hesitate; she launched herself forward, wrapping her small arms tightly around his neck and burying her face in his shoulder.

“Are we safe now, Daddy?” Lily whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

“We’re safe, sweetheart,” Mark whispered back, kissing the top of her tangled blond hair while holding her so tightly his own arms ached. “We’re never going back there.”

Behind them, as Agent Thomas continued shouting orders into his satellite phone, a dull, metallic clicking sound echoed from inside the charred leather briefcase Mark had managed to kick away from Clara just before the beam fell—a briefcase that was now resting safely in the grass beside Deputy Vance’s boots, with its digital display blinking a steady, unyielding green light.
