Chapter 13 - The Unregistered Signal

The red warning banner flashing across the satellite phone screen commanded immediate attention, casting an urgent crimson glow over Agent Thomas’s face. He tapped the interface, his eyebrows knitting together in a deep frown as he read the incoming telemetry data transmitted from the state police roadblock three miles away.
“What is it?” Mark asked, stepping forward instinctively, keeping one arm protectively around Lily’s shoulders.
Agent Thomas looked up from the screen, his expression entirely devoid of its previous professional composure. “The state police roadblock three miles down the county road just reported an unscheduled vehicle breaching their perimeter at high speed. They tried to deploy spike strips, but the driver rammed through the cruiser and kept going.”
Sheriff Miller, sitting quietly in the back of the state police cruiser with his hands cuffed, raised his head slowly. A grim, knowing smirk touched the corners of his weathered mouth.
“You think Julian Vance was the only mastermind in this county?” Miller rasped, his voice cutting through the hiss of the smoldering mansion ruins. “The old man was just the public face of the board. There are silent partners in Washington and Zurich who invested heavily in this estate. If they realize the encrypted ledger has been recovered, they won’t stop until every witness is permanently silenced.”
Mark’s jaw tightened. He looked down at little Lily, who was shivering slightly beneath the cool night breeze rolling down from the hills. The nightmare wasn’t over; the head of the snake had been severed, but the body was still thrashing blindly in the dark.
“How far out are they?” Mark demanded, his voice dropping into a hard, tactical register.
“Less than two minutes,” Agent Thomas said, pulling his service pistol from his shoulder holster and checking the magazine slide with a sharp click. He motioned to the two state troopers guarding the perimeter. “Fall back to the vehicles! Get the girl and Arthur into the armored transport immediately!”
The two troopers moved with practiced efficiency, unlatching the heavy rear doors of the black federal SUV and ushering Arthur inside the climate-controlled cabin. Mark scooped Lily up into his arms, feeling the warm, steady beat of her heart against his chest, and carried her toward the open door of the transport.
As Mark placed Lily safely in the backseat beside a federal medic, a pair of blinding high-beam headlights suddenly swept across the tree-lined driveway, cutting through the thick smoke like twin laser beams.
A heavy, black luxury SUV roared around the final bend of the private road, accelerating at terrifying speed directly toward the smoldering ruins of the mansion and the cluster of parked cruisers.
Agent Thomas raised his weapon, planting his feet firmly in the gravel. “Hold your fire! Identify yourselves!”

The black SUV didn’t slow down. Instead, the passenger-side window rolled down smoothly, and the cold barrel of a suppressed automatic weapon poked out into the night air.
