Chapter 8 - The Power Grid Failure

The sudden plunge into darkness was absolute. The harsh halogen spotlight overhead died instantly, leaving the laboratory illuminated only by the faint, pulsing red glow of the emergency exit signs flickering along the ceiling. A low, grinding hum reverberated through the concrete foundations as the hospital’s automated emergency generators struggled and failed to engage.
“Secure the doors!” Miller shouted in the dark, his polished composure entirely replaced by sudden, frantic panic. “Get the auxiliary power back online now!”
Heavy footsteps thudded across the concrete floor as the tactical guards scrambled toward the main exit. Arthur didn't hesitate. Seizing the momentary chaos, he threw his weight sideways, tipping his heavy metal chair over. The bolted legs sheared out of the weak concrete base with a sharp snap, sending him crashing hard onto the floor but freeing his arms from the bindings.
“Julian!” Arthur called out through the gloom, scrambling on his hands and knees across the cold surface.
“I’m here!” Julian’s voice shouted back from a few feet away. The sound of a scuffle echoed through the room—a muffled grunt, the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor, and the unmistakable metallic clatter of a dropped firearm.
Arthur pushed himself up to his feet, shaking off the disorientation. In the dim red glow of the emergency lights, he saw Elena standing frozen near the corner, her hands covering her mouth in shock.
“Elena, we need to move, now!” Arthur urged, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward the open doorway of the lab.
“No, wait—the patients!” Elena protested, trying to pull away toward the inner ward. “If the life support systems don't switch to manual backup within two minutes, the ventilators in sector four will shut down!”
Arthur cursed under his breath. He looked back toward the center of the lab. Julian was wrestling with one of the tactical guards on the floor, having managed to pin the man’s arm behind his back, while the second guard was stumbling blindly toward the wall switches in the dark.
“Julian, grab the guard’s keycard!” Arthur yelled over the rising whine of failing electrical systems.
Julian wrenched a heavy magnetic access card from the downed guard’s tactical vest, shoved the man hard against the steel desk, and sprinted toward Arthur and Elena.
“The main breaker for the life support grid is down the hall in the mechanical room!” Elena said urgently, her eyes wide with terror as she pointed down the dark corridor. “If Miller’s lockdown sequence finishes initializing, the security bulkheads will seal this entire floor permanently!”
They didn't wait another second. Arthur grabbed Elena’s hand, and the three of them bolted out of the laboratory into the pitch-black corridor. Behind them, the sharp sound of Miller shouting orders echoed through the damp air, followed by the terrifying mechanical whine of massive steel security doors beginning to slide shut from the ceiling at the far end of the hall.

“Run!” Julian shouted, putting on a burst of speed that defied his injuries as the heavy metal bulkhead slammed downward toward the floor with thunderous force, missing them by mere inches.
