Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

Arthur spun around sharply, his flashlight beam slicing through the damp gloom of the hallway to illuminate Director Miller standing ten paces behind them. The administrator was flanked by two massive men in heavy black tactical gear, their faces obscured by opaque visors and their hands resting casually on the grips of suppressed submachine guns. Miller didn't look angry; he looked disappointed, like a schoolteacher dealing with exceptionally stubborn children.

“You really should have taken my advice, Arthur,” Miller said softly, his voice echoing smoothly off the concrete walls. “Curiosity is a fatal flaw in our line of work. Especially when you start poking around in wings that don't officially exist on the city zoning maps.”

Julian stepped smoothly in front of Arthur, his right hand slipping inside his jacket to grip the butt of his service weapon, though he knew the tactical disadvantage was absolute.

“You’re operating outside federal healthcare regulations, Miller,” Julian stated, his voice completely steady despite the barrels aimed directly at his chest. “Storing unauthorized personnel in a condemned sub-basement isn't just a compliance violation; it’s federal kidnapping.”

Miller let out a quiet, dry chuckle, shaking his head slowly as he took a measured step closer.

“Kidnapping implies we took someone against their will, Detective,” Miller replied smoothly. “What we have down here is a humanitarian quarantine. A voluntary isolation protocol designed to protect the general public from a pathogen the Center for Disease Control decided was too politically volatile to acknowledge.”

Elena turned away from the open doorway, her face etched with profound sorrow as she looked at the two investigators. She didn't look surprised by Miller’s arrival; she looked as if she had been expecting this exact confrontation for months.

“They aren't prisoners, Arthur,” Elena spoke up for the first time, her voice trembling slightly but carrying a fierce, unshakable dignity. “They are the surviving witnesses of the clinical trials that built this entire hospital foundation. If Miller lets them walk out of here, the board loses everything.”

Arthur’s eyes darted from Elena to the open doorway behind her. Through the threshold, he caught a glimpse of a makeshift medical ward inside the large room. Several elderly patients sat in modern reclining beds, hooked up to intravenous drips, staring blankly toward the door with hollow, sunken eyes.

“Clinical trials?” Arthur whispered, horror gripping his chest. “The 2018 respiratory outbreak... the official report said all infected patients were successfully treated and discharged.”

“The official report was a masterpiece of public relations,” Miller said coldly, signaling the tactical guards to step forward. “And now, unfortunately, you two have read the unedited draft. Disarm them.”

The two tactical officers moved with terrifying efficiency, closing the distance between them in seconds. Before Julian could draw his weapon, one of the guards struck him sharply across the wrist with the heavy stock of his rifle. Julian grunted in pain, his pistol clattering loudly against the concrete floor.

Arthur lunged forward to help his colleague, but a second guard grabbed him from behind, pinning his arms tightly against his torso with iron strength.

“Don't make this harder than it has to be, Mr. Vance,” Miller warned, stepping right up to Arthur and staring directly into his eyes. “We are going to take a very short walk down to the primary lab. And you are going to explain to me how you managed to bypass our firewall.”
