Chapter 1 - The Disputed Coordinates

The harsh glow of the computer monitor cast an eerie blue light across the cramped, rain-streaked office. Outside the window, the Chicago skyline blurred behind sheets of relentless midnight rain. Arthur Vance, a thirty-five-year-old man with a meticulously trimmed beard and dark hair, stared intently at the screen. He wore a crisp dark suit and tie, though his collar was unbuttoned from hours of agonizing search. Beside him sat Julian Carter, a forty-five-year-old veteran investigator with short dark hair, a rugged beard, and a heavy dark jacket. The surveillance footage on the screen showed a quiet hospital hallway.
“There... we found her,” Julian said softly, breaking the tense silence of the room.
Arthur leaned forward, his hands gripping the edge of the metal desk. His eyes narrowed as he tracked the familiar figure moving through the sterile corridors.
“Where’s she going?” Arthur asked, his voice tight with an underlying frustration that had been building for the past forty-eight hours.
Julian exhaled slowly, watching the blue-uniformed woman push a heavy food cart deeper into the labyrinthine basement of St. Jude Memorial Hospital.
“She’s heading toward the old sub-basement storage units,” Julian replied, tapping his pen against the desk. “The ones that were supposedly decommissioned three years ago after the structural failure.”
Arthur shook his head sharply, leaning back in his ergonomic chair. He rubbed his tired eyes before fixing Julian with a sharp, incredulous stare.
“That makes zero operational sense, Julian,” Arthur argued, his tone rising with sharp skepticism. “Elena is a senior dietary coordinator, not a rogue agent. Why would she smuggle three industrial-sized meal warmers into a condemned wing at two in the morning?”
Julian shifted in his seat, turning to face his younger colleague directly.
“Maybe she’s selling hospital supplies on the black market, Arthur. Look at the financial audits from her department. There’s a discrepancy of over twelve thousand dollars in specialized nutritional formulas over the last six months.”
“Audits lie, Julian!” Arthur snapped back, slamming his palm flat against the wooden desk. “You haven’t looked at her personnel file closely enough. Her husband was a patient in that exact hospital before he passed away in the respiratory ward. She isn't a thief. She's grieving.”
“Grief doesn't excuse unauthorized access to restricted zones, Arthur!” Julian retorted, his voice hardening as he stood up to loom over the desk. “If we ignore protocol now, Internal Affairs will tear both our badges apart before the sun comes up. We stop her right now, or I make the call to facility security myself.”
Arthur gripped the edge of his desk so hard his knuckles turned stark white. He glared up at Julian, refusing to back down from the confrontation.
“You touch that phone, Julian, and you’ll ruin the only real human being left in this entire corrupt institution,” Arthur whispered through clenched teeth.

Julian stared down at him, his finger hovering millimeters away from the office landline.
