Chapter 10 - The Breach of the Inner Sanctum

The heavy iron door groaned in protest as another massive thud shook the reinforced frame. The deadbolt rattled violently within its housing, sending metal shavings raining down onto the concrete floor.
“They’re using a hydraulic ram!” Julian shouted, pushing himself away from the metal pillar and scanning the room for an alternate exit. “Arthur, we need another way out of here right now or we’re going to be buried alive in this tomb.”
Arthur surveyed the cavernous mechanical room. Towering exhaust vents lined the far wall, leading upward into the vertical shaft system, but they were narrow and heavily grilled.
“Elena, is there a secondary service tunnel connected to this room?” Arthur asked urgently, grabbing her shoulder to get her attention away from the control console.
Elena pointed toward a narrow, unassuming wooden door tucked away in the darkest corner behind the main generator turbines.
“The old steam tunnels,” Elena replied, her voice breathless. “They connect directly to the laundry facility in the main basement two levels up. But they haven't been inspected in twenty years. The structural integrity is completely compromised.”
“It’s better than waiting here to be executed by Miller’s cleanup crew,” Julian said, grabbing the iron handle of the wooden door and yanking it open.
A wave of hot, humid air billowed out from the dark tunnel beyond, smelling strongly of sulfur and industrial detergent. With a deafening crash, the iron door behind them finally gave way. The deadbolt snapped clean off its mounting brackets, and the heavy door swung inward with a violent clang.
Director Miller stepped through the threshold, flanked by the two tactical guards with their weapons raised and aimed directly at them. Miller’s suit was immaculate, but his face was twisted in a cold, furious snarl that stripped away all pretense of corporate civility.
“End of the line, gentlemen,” Miller said, raising his hand to signal the guards. “Drop to your knees, put your hands behind your heads, and let’s finish this quietly.”
Arthur looked at Miller, then glanced back at the dark, yawning mouth of the steam tunnel behind them. He took a slow step backward, planting his boots near the threshold.
“You can’t hide this forever, Miller,” Arthur said loudly, his voice echoing off the metal walls. “The federal server already has the files. Even if you kill us down here, the investigation is already out of your hands.”
Miller smiled, a cold, humorless expression that sent a chill straight down Arthur’s spine.
“You assume the federal server belongs to an agency that cares about a few forgotten patients, Arthur,” Miller replied smoothly. “The pharmaceutical conglomerate funding this facility owns more senators than you have brain cells. By sunrise, your names will be added to the missing persons report of investigators who vanished during an unauthorized raid on a condemned municipal property.”
The lead tactical guard stepped forward, raising his submachine gun toward Arthur’s chest.
“Do it,” Miller whispered.
Before the guard could pull the trigger, Julian lunged sideways, grabbing a heavy iron wrench from a nearby workbench and hurling it with all his might directly into the overhead halogen lighting grid.

The heavy bulb shattered into a million blinding sparks, plunging the entire mechanical room into sudden, absolute darkness.
