Chapter 11 - The Steam Tunnel Escape

The shattered halogen bulb exploded in a shower of white-hot sparks, casting the mechanical room into instantaneous, pitch-black darkness. Shouts of surprise echoed from the tactical guards as the sudden loss of vision disrupted their aim.

“Go, go, go!” Julian yelled, grabbing Arthur by the shoulder and shoving him bodily through the narrow wooden doorway into the suffocating heat of the steam tunnels.

Elena scrambled through the threshold right behind them, pulling the heavy wooden door shut with a loud slam just as a volley of suppressed gunfire chewed through the wood panels above their heads. Splinters exploded into the air, but the door held long enough for them to plunge deep into the labyrinthine network of rusty pipes and concrete arches.

The heat inside the steam tunnel was oppressive, thick with moisture and the metallic tang of boiling water hissing through aging industrial lines overhead. They scrambled on hands and knees over uneven concrete, guided only by the faint red glow of emergency exit markers bleeding through the distant grates.

“Keep moving!” Arthur urged, coughing from the sulfurous air as he helped Elena navigate a particularly steep decline in the tunnel floor.

Behind them, the muffled sounds of Miller and his guards forcing the wooden door open echoed down the narrow brick conduit. The beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness far behind them, sweeping wildly across the curved walls like a hunting predator’s eye.

“They’re right behind us!” Julian warned, pressing his back against the damp brick wall to catch his breath for a split second.

“There’s a maintenance hatch fifty yards ahead,” Elena panted, pointing frantically through the swirling steam toward a circular iron wheel set into the ceiling. “It leads directly up into the hospital’s central laundry sorting facility. If we can reach it before they cut off the sector, we can blend in with the morning shift.”

They pushed forward through the sweltering heat, their clothes soaked through with sweat and grime. Every breath burned their lungs, but adrenaline kept their legs moving.

As they reached the circular iron hatch, Julian leaped up, grabbing the rungs of the fixed metal ladder and pulling himself hand over hand to the top. He gripped the heavy wheel latch and turned it frantically. The gears groaned, protesting against decades of rust, before finally releasing with a loud, metallic pop.

Julian pushed the heavy iron lid upward, letting in a blast of cool, clean air and the faint, distant hum of industrial washing machines.

“Up! Move!” Julian shouted down into the dark tunnel.

Elena scrambled up the ladder first, her hands slipping once before Julian caught her arm and hoisted her safely through the opening. Arthur followed closely behind, pulling himself out of the dark conduit just as the beam of a tactical flashlight illuminated the bottom of the ladder below them.

“I see them!” a gruff voice shouted from the tunnel.

Arthur grabbed the heavy iron hatch lid and slammed it down hard, locking the deadbolt securely from the laundry room side just as heavy fists began pounding furiously against the metal from below.
